Fly London and “Second Sleep”

I love Fly London shoes. They’re as comfy as sneakers.

This boot is just silly. Cute, but silly.

I am fairly severely sleep-deprived and therefore unable to get any meaningful work done. To be honest, I’m just trying to stay awake until 9pm so I don’t wake up at 3AM bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Have you heard about this “Second Sleep” concept from the ole times? I seriously think that might work for me. After an intense day I find that it really works to sleep from about 4:30-7pm, stay up from 7 PM to 2 or 3 AM and then sleep until about 8 AM.

The trouble with that is that it makes it impossible not to eat four meals a day, and I’m committed to not doing that.

As the light grows less and we all have just as much to accomplish in a day as we ever do, do you find your energy flagging earlier? I know that’s natural, it’s just not helpful! Are you a napper? A “two-phase” sleeper?

Oxfords

Gals, you’re in luck if you hate heels. Oxfords are all the rage lately. They’re comfy and fashionable. Here are some ideas for styling.

I’m have a few pairs myself, and adore them:

I found these vintage Fluevogs on e-bay and have been wearing them all the time this fall with trousers, a white blouse, cardigan and scarf.

It’s against my religion to wear sneakers in public. These are as comfy as it gets without resorting to athletic shoes. The soles are primo. Any flats I wear have to have some sort of bulk to them or else my feet look too tiny to hold up my meatball bod. Proportion, darlings!

Can She Wear Boots?

A pigeon inquires,

As fall approaches and I’m looking at all the cute outfits everyone is posting, I need an opinion. Being a traditionally built woman, as they say in Botswana (read: curvy and left skinny a long time ago), is there any way I can wear boots in a flattering manner? I don’t even mean for Sunday. I mean ever. Skinny girls can get away with anything, but I have yet to see boots shown on a larger, curvier woman, or with an outfit that I think would be even remotely flattering, in any of the fashion posts. There are some super cute boots out there, but no leggings (as per your post), skinny jeans are out for some of the same reasons, maybe with a denim skirt? Maybe I need images. Or will boots just bulk up my lower legs. Or can I even find boots to fit?

Someone forgot to eat her Confidence Puffs for breakfast!

Girl. Of COURSE you can wear boots. Do you see yourself in boots? Can you imagine yourself in a pair of great boots swaggering all over town bringing the love ‘o God to all you meet? Why not? Boots come in a huge, almost infinite variety. There are ankle boots, thigh boots, cowboy boots, riding boots, motorcycle boots, Goth boots, and Go-Go boots! They’re round-toed, pointy, high-heeled or flat. They come in suede, leather, pleather, and vinyl. I would be a sad case without my boots, which are my fall/winter shoes of choice.

The thing to do is start collecting pictures. Think about boots you’ve seen on other women and loved. Is there a way to rock that look yourself? Go and start experimenting. Try some on. I could say, “Oh yes, a great pair of chestnut riding boots would be the perfect classic to wear with skirts and pants,” but I don’t know you. Only you know you.

Readers, please submit photos of yourself wearing boots to share with our Bootless Pigeon. Show her how you do it.

You can send them to me at my real first name dot my real last name @ gmail.com. If you can’t figure that out I just don’t know what to say.

Canvass Shoes

I’m sorry (not really, but you already knew that), but these shoes and their ilk are not suitable for professional wear in any context.

By all means, buy the shoes and wear them in good health for a good cause on your days off. Just know that they are the footwear equivalent of pajamas and do not adequately communicate the responsibilities of your role in the community. “Oh, hey, I came here in my BEDROOM SLIPPERS to discuss the urgent issues of poverty and hunger in town.”

It’s fine to purchase clothing that speaks to your values. It’s not not always fine to wear them in a professional context.

A Good Sensible Shoe

Helpful Pigeon Amy Walter-Peterson has words of high praise for this perfectly fine black wedge shoe by Circa Joan & David, on sale now at 6pm.com and Zappos.com. She says they go well with pants or a skirt (with tights) or even jeans and are comfy enough to wear in all the settings your ministry will take you.

PeaceBang has come to appreciate the Perfectly Fine Black Shoe. Her own shoe wardrobe is a mix of “Let’s Face It, These Are Not Practical For a Long Day” black shoes and “Okay, I Suppose I Could Wear These If I HAVE To But I’m Not Going To Feel Like My Best Self” black shoes and “I Hate These But They Seemed Cute At the Time” black shoes and “These Are SO ME But They’re Way Too Bohemian For Ministry” black shoes. Which is why she wears black boots 75% of the time, because Mr. John Fluevog is a GOD and PeaceBang is a Boots Girl at heart.

Why is it so all-fired HARD to find a perfectly nice, fine black shoe that isn’t a frumpy Mary Jane, isn’t a ballerina flat, isn’t pinch-your-toes hard leather, and isn’t one inch too high to be able to comfortably wear for a day on your feet? Because it just is. It is one of the immutable truths of the universe, darlings: a simple black shoe for work is hard to find!

So thank you, Amy, for this recommendation. I bought a pair on 6pm.com and I’ll let you know if they work out. A decent-looking 1.5″ black wedge with some toe-wiggle room for my busted up feet (which are aching again in this wet weather) is nothing to sneeze at.
