I love Fly London shoes. They’re as comfy as sneakers.
This boot is just silly. Cute, but silly.
I am fairly severely sleep-deprived and therefore unable to get any meaningful work done. To be honest, I’m just trying to stay awake until 9pm so I don’t wake up at 3AM bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Have you heard about this “Second Sleep” concept from the ole times? I seriously think that might work for me. After an intense day I find that it really works to sleep from about 4:30-7pm, stay up from 7 PM to 2 or 3 AM and then sleep until about 8 AM.
The trouble with that is that it makes it impossible not to eat four meals a day, and I’m committed to not doing that.
As the light grows less and we all have just as much to accomplish in a day as we ever do, do you find your energy flagging earlier? I know that’s natural, it’s just not helpful! Are you a napper? A “two-phase” sleeper?

OK … I’ve started drinking a glass of iced tea around 3 pm. It’s refreshing AND revitalizing! And gets me in touch with my southern roots. 🙂 Definitely helps me re-engage with the world mid-afternoon.
I tried the second sleep thing in my early 20s, but it didn’t work out for me. Will be intrigued to hear how it goes for you.
Happy evening!
I spent some time in a hot, third world country with no air conditioning. This meant that I naturally had to take a siesta after the large mid-day meal — too hot to do otherwise. At night I went to bed late and got up early. It was the only time in my life I ever woke up early feeling refreshed. Back home, though, no way I can adopt this pattern even though I felt much better and slept less when I could have an afternoon siesta.
I thought that four good healthy meals were preferable to three. Just spread around your calories.
I did the split shift sleep thing in college when I did not want to sacrifice night life and early morning. It was kind of great.
I’ve thought about intentionally moving to a Second Sleep pattern. The few times I have stumbled into it — coming home particularly tired, sometimes for medical reasons, and then laying down for a hefty 2 hour nap — have been interesting. I wake up very groggy and regretting that I let it happen, but then my body kicks over into a more productive state, and my second sleep is more than sufficient.
My body sooooooo wants me to be a two-phase sleeper! And if I wasn’t married, I would be doing it RIGHT NOW. But I know it would be disruptive to him, and it would cut into our time together in the evenings… but someday, I will succomb, and he will just have to live with me sleeping from 8pm til 2am, and then 4am til 6am. I totally need my full 8 hrs. or I’m a zombie, but I am always wide away in the wee hours of the morning. Crazy! But if it’s what my body wants to do, I should find a way to accommodate it, right?
I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I just want to ask a clarifying question. You highlight the comfort of the shoes. But in doing so you are not suggesting that they’re appropriate for professional wear. Am I right about that? [I think they’re great for professional wear. The boots are a little wacky – I wouldn’t preach in them – but all of these shoes are perfectly appropriate for a day of ministry work. – PB]
One semester in college I really did the second sleep thing. I’d sleep from about 6pm to 10pm, then wake up and go study with my friends in the basement of the college chapel–it had a computer, and the chaplain gave us a key. We’d study till about 2am, then I’d go home & sleep from 3-7. It worked great. I agree with Sonja though–hard to be partnered and do this, though my partner is working nights these days, so I’m doing a version of this when I go to sleep later at night, wake up to get kids to school, then come back and nap with her.
