A Very Important Shoe Question

Rev. Gidget wants to know,

Here’s a Deep Shoe Query:
Your shoe lust tends to inspire my own shoe lust, which is whomped up by checking out the Naturalizer, Dansko Outlet and Easy Spirit websites (just to let you know how generally tame my taste is!) The question that just struck me is thus: On Sunday morning, do you plan your shoes for your suit/outfit underneath the robe, or is your primary consideration matching the robe? I wear my black academic robe most Sundays of the year. Typically, I wear a simple black pump with a 2″ heel, which looks elegant with this robe. During my personal shoe experience now, I saw a fetching pair of tan suede pumps that would be lovely with my favorite suit and other things I wear on Sunday. But wouldn’t it look dorky with the robe?
Inquiring minds want to know…

Dear Gidge,

I think it’s a matter of your own style. I get dressed on Sunday mornings for my outfit, not for my robe. THAT SAID, my Sunday morning outfits are always chosen with consideration for the fact that I’ll be in a preaching robe and stole most of the morning.

I wear all sorts of funky shoes with my robe but it depends on your setting and your preference. I mean, I certainly wouldn’t wear scuffed casual shoes or anything canvass or mesh or velcro-related. I wouldn’t wear my Merrill mocassins or suede snow boots. When I say “funky” I mean a proper leather shoe or sandal, something dressy, something polished. Usually a boot in the chilly months and usually a Mary Jane or wedge sandal in warmer months (although I believe in a closed toe shoe for church).

If I am wearing a casual shoe with my outfit because my feet hurt or I have lots of meetings that day, I pop on a pair of black pumps I keep in the office for the service. They are a Very Respectable Lady Pump with a silver buckle and it’s simple enough to slip into them for 10-11 AM and change back as I am getting out of my robe before fellowship hour.

I see great benefit to having a Sensible Shoe on hand at the office to put on right before one heads to the sanctuary. You know you’ll be comfortable, you’ll know you match the robe, you keep the shoes polished, they’ll never be wet or muddy, and they can frankly be pretty ugly and you’re not stuck in them all day.

Hope that helps. xoxo

Shoe Lust, July 20 Edition, Part Deux

The incomparable John Fleuvog.

These are, you should excuse the expression, totally pimpin’. With a smart black suit? ALSOME.

Love the mossy green. And these look fantastic on. I know ’cause I tried ’em on in Chicago. A girl can dream. These would be fantastic church shoes. Amazingly comfortable (seriously, even for my messed up tootsies), sturdy, understated but fashioning, and an interesting neutral that goes with EVERYTHING.

For the gents, these are wicked “shahp.”

Seriously, if you wanted to do something interesting you could build a look entirely from amazing shoes and black suits. I’d love to be that brave. You could wear a designer like Fleuvog as a sort of walking art collection. Of course you could only buy one pair a year, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

I’m dizzy with shoe lust over these boots.

Men’s Boots

Mi amigo Adam, when not struggling with his Doctor of Ministry work, has been thinking about boots. He wants some advice about boots for guys.

In researching these boots, I found myself channeling a Minnesota man with a thick Minnesota accent. Don’t ask why (I lived in Minnesota for two years, maybe that’s why). You can find all of these on Zappos.com. They are in a wide range of prices — everything from $59 to $300.

mens boots2 magnum
Here ya got the basic kinda sporty boot by Magnum. These’ll do ya fine, now.

mens boots north face
Here are some more sporty type boots by The North Face. Kinda preppy, the way a lot of you New England folk like.

mens boots timberland
These Timberlands here are up a step in the classy factor. Still good for the weather, there, and you won’t slip on the ice, there.

mens boots uggs
Don’t be wearing UGGS for guys. What kind of man shoe is that, now? People will think you accidentally wore your wife’s shoes outta the house! Oh, for dumb.

mens boots chippewa oiled wellington
Now that there is a self-respecting boot by Chippewa (Oiled Wellington) that any working man wouldn’t sniffle at. You could wear those to your ordinary office day and your fancier events except a funeral.

mens boots1 doc martens
Ya got these Doc Martens that seem a little bit too high fashion for me, but I’ve gotta say that’s a real nice boot there.

mens boots frye
I suppose you could do worse than these here Frye boots but I don’t know. They’re awful close to something a cowboy might wear, and why in the world do you want to look like you live in Texas or something?

mens boots giorgio brutini
These are a fancy type pair of boots that you might want to have for those special occasions like a conference or something. They’re by a fellow named Giorgio Brutini, not that I can pronounce that. Sounds like spaghetti sauce.

mens boots zengara
Lotta fellas like that there square toe. I happen to be kind of partial to it myself. Someone called Zengara makes these and they’re not too hard on the wallet, either.

Okay, then. You can get these boots from Zappos.com but there’s nothing wrong with just going to the local store, either.

Born Shoes

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, PeaceBang is DELIRIOUS WITH EXCITEMENT!

Because Born shoes has decided that their fall line is all about us being fairie queens and princesses and living in the forest and wearing the COOLEST clothes imagineable and having pointy eyebrows and long braided hair and wings! And they have the most beautiful FONT to tell the story about their forest wonderland and the shoes are also by the way simply DREAMY and I want them ALL!

born elf

I thought I was buying a fairly ordinary pair of much-needed brown pumps at DSW Shoe Warehouse this afternoon but I was so WRONG! What I was actually purchasing was a ticket to a magickal world of enchantment for my entire life, not just my feet!

My secret faierie name is Winterwynd Scarlettgarlandberri. You spell it with a small star over the final i. Please call me that from now on. You can call me “Winter” for short.

Merrily skipping hence,
Winterwynd

Born Gabi
I would love to wear these to church… with sticks in my hair and a preaching robe made entirely of reindeer skins.

Born Giddy
Winterwynd seriously loves these. She would run an elf off the road for them.

Born Zola
And these? In purple suede? Oh yes, Santa! Please!?
