Living Up To the Unexpected Corsage

Celebration is so important. Sometimes we forget, don’t we, chickens?

I attended an event tonight at which my congregation was being honored. Such things are always pleasant once you get to them, and I’m sure I am not alone in finding them to be humbling. It is a deep honor to represent a church that itself is being honored. You’re standing there on behalf of a lot of good folks.

So I always dress thoughtfully for such occasions, and tonight I was grateful that I decided to wear a skirt instead of pants even though it was chilly and drizzly because the organizers pinned a beautiful corsage on me when I arrived! A corsage is FANCY, so you bet I was very glad I had done my hair and make-up and put on pretty earrings and pantyhose and such. I really didn’t know what to wear, but I remembered that PeaceBang always advises to err on the side of formality and I am so glad I did. Had I worn the less formal option I had considered, the corsage would have looked like a silk purse on a sow’s ear. That PeaceBang gives some good advice sometimes!

Here’s what’s extra wonderful: I wore a cool pair of Jeffrey Campbell shoes and was complimented on them by two women at the event, so of course we started chatting shoes (and hair). I introduced myself and then they introduced themselves and one of them is a local blues singer who I totally love and I was able to shower her with fan girl admiration and then all of us made a date for tomorrow night to hear music together and she’ll sing and maybe I’ll even sing. AND she wants to come to our church on Sunday.

Shoes bring people TOGETHER.

  1. You might want to talk some time with our colleague Lynn Strauss about shoes. She has an interesting take on the issue.
