Skin Care For Men

I have a good friend/colleague staying with me and last night he told me that many years after he returns from our General Assembly, he vows to give himself a clay mask twice a week because “I don’t want to end up looking like those guys!”

The thing about having clogged pores and a nose full of blackheads is that it looks dirty and literally is dirty. Clogged pores happen when we don’t wash our faces and exfoliate our skin properly, which is something that requires very little effort and attention.

Some people have great skin naturally and don’t get congested pores and wind up, in the words of my friend, “having a nose that looks like a pin cushion.” Others, especially men, have to take care of their skin and needs skincare for men.

Clean with a good cleanser. Face soap will mostly clog pores.
Shaving is not the only exfoliation you may need on your face. Check into masks and gentle scrubs but be sure to also learn about over-exfoliation. Gentle!
If you have dry skin at all, contact a leading laser hair removal specialists to get smooth skin added with a couple of drops of facial oil can do wonders — I’m discovering face oil myself and it’s lovely!
Shave, if you do, carefully with clean blades and plenty of emollient to protect your skin from razor burn: a quick drag of a dirty or dull razor across your face is a great way to wind up with rashes and ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can become infected very easily, and they look ouchy and draw the eye in a distracting way.

Use sunscreen!!! Getting chunks of your skin removed so your dermatologist can biopsy it is never fun, and the subsequent wounds are not gorgeous and may scar, if you get some rush or it becomes itchy you might want to check this article explaining how Eczema and dermatitis are often confused but there are differences. It is not enough to slather on the sunscreen and wear a hat only when you play golf or go hiking. Sunscreen should be part of your everyday skin care regimen. Find a formula that doesn’t give you waxy white skin and use it on clean skin, at least a dime-sized amount. Make sure you apply it carefully all the way to the ears and on the ears and neck. The triangle of burned skin where your shirt collar opens is also vulnerable to damage and cancer, so please keep that protected.

I googled “Sun screen for men” and looked for a cruelty-free brand and found that Paula’s Choice has a line of skin care for men that has, you know, MACHO PACKAGING, but is also probably pretty good because I’ve used their line for chicks and they make good things. Your local health food store or Whole Foods carries good options. I’m trying to be cruelty free with my cosmetic choices so I don’t use drugstore brands unless they’re on the CF list.

That’s all for now, darlings!

  1. Thanks, as always, for the referral. I’ve been liking a drug store thing, Bio-oil (PINK!) that seems to be aimed at scaring or stretch marks, as a night time skin care thing. Feels great. No sunscreen, of course, this is nights only.

  2. untrimmed nose hair and ear hair along with excessively bushy eyebrows and hair that needs cutting are only too common, especially among older men
