So, darlings, I went to bed late on Saturday night after a sort of sloggy few days during which I had not drunk enough water or gotten enough sleep or eaten nutritiously enough or been outdoors or very active at all. I woke on Sunday morning looking like the true Winter Hag, blotchy pink and sallow, baggy-eyed and ghastly.
I thought, Oh no, I cannot go to church and scare the good people. I must do something drastic.
Then I remembered the Kardashians and how they use tons of contouring make-up to get their fresh, glamorous glow and I thought, I am no Kardashian — and thank you, God, for that — but I do have a highlighting pencil I can use, why don’t I give it a try and draw some light and glow onto my face and fake it until I feel less like The Corpse Bride?
So I drew dots and X’s on my face with my Benefit Highlighting pencil and blended them nicely with my ring finger (gently pat into the skin – don’t rub) and voila, when I was all done I had a nice, pretty complexion for the cameras.
Here I am looking like a weird spot-faced troll:

Just cross-hatch where you want some light to reflect. In my next attempt at contouring I am going to draw in some dark shadow lines for cheekbones and to slim my nose. I just don’t have the right make-up for that yet. I used a Tarte concealer under my eyes. I applied it fairly heavily because I would be on camera and because I had Walter Mondale bags:
The miracle is that I look like a normal human being who isn’t terribly caked in make-up. You can’t tell much here in natural light of my study but I could see a big improvement on the video from church:

I’m a fan of this product, which I get at Sephora. I don’t know what kind of variety they have for a span of skin tones.

Speaking of make-up tricks and contouring, are you darlings watching Season 7 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race?” Remember what Ru says: “We’re born naked and the rest is drag.”
MWAH!

I’m guessing you meant to type “cross-hatch”? 🙂
BA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! OMG worst typo EVER!!!
Do tell us what you originally typed! [CROTCH-HATCHING! – PB]
I haven’t done make-up contour trick – but I did look in the mirror last week and my hair looked so terrible and I looked haggard and immediately made an appointment for a haircut. And when my stylist saw me, she said “can I please put a color rinse (not exactly what she called it) on your hair? your hair and your skin tone are too matched, and it’s washing you out.” and I remembered a BTFM post about this very phenom – and threw my hands in the air and said “Yes, please!”
So, things are looking up in this department. [Yay! And good for your stylist for speaking up and reminding you of the wash-out phenom. How did it turn out? – PB]
Regarding wash-out and the hair-rinse … I can’t tell a big difference, and she said next time she wants to use something darker. So I’m optimistic!
