Reading Glasses

You can totally blame or credit Myrtle Snow for these.

I am having my eyes checked on Monday and I just know the doc is going to tell me I need bi-focals. No! No! No! I will make do with my contact lenses and readers on top of those! And holding the print away from my face when I need to and up really close with my glasses pushed onto my forehead when I need to!

But how about those cute readers, huh? Can’t wait to rock ’em. How about that moment in the worship service when you’re reading the lyrics to the Recessional Hymn and trying to walk at the same time, but you’ve got your readers on, and you’re looking down at the text through your readers and then up to the Narthex and trying not to fall over? Aging clergy eyes. It’s a beautiful thing, innit.

  1. ‘Twas a sobering thing to be staring down the rack of readers at Walgreens one day. I kept saying, “How can this be? I’m only 16.”

  2. I understand what you’re feeling BUT I’ve had progressives for a year now and I actually love them (as much as it is possible to love glasses). Of course I’d rather go back to 20/20 if that was at all possible, but progs are way better than when I was trying to get by with readers and contacts. On the other hand, readers are cheap and progs are not!

  3. I think it’s more aging to fiddle with readers. I guess you prefer the look with contacts and don’t want to wear glasses
    – oh well, just wait – after your cataract operation you won’t need anything – …but that will probably be 1/4 of a century from now given your present age.

  4. I agree. Progressives are just fabulous. But if you’re looking for FABULOUS and inexpensive readers, don’t rely on the local pharmacies. Go to http://www.readers.com I have 6 or 7 pairs — each about $12 — in really terrific styles. They also hold up quite well. I have a great pair of progressives; I considered them a major investment, since they are, as Dame Edna always says, a piece of “face furniture” after all. But I rely on having stylish readers in nearly every room and in my office and in my car so that they’re there if I need them. [DAME EDNA!! POSSUMS!! – PB]

  5. Love my progressive trifocals…but I do miss the fun of funky readers. You’re totally rocking the Myrtle readers.

Myrtle’s outfits and style were the only redeemable things about AHS this round — what a terrible waste of talent (of many of the actors) and a terrible waste of my time (as I kept thinking, “It will be better/all come together next week…” — but it never did, and the last episode was a total bust)…

  6. Readers are fine if your eyes are fairly similar, but mine were so out of balance that I couldn’t get readers that helped them both — progressives are grand.
