I love the Rev. Alison Miller’s style. When I met her I seriously thought she was about 15 years old although she was in her early 20’s. She is a very petite lady who has grown into ministerial authority beautifully through the years. Small as she is, and with a fairly youthful voice, she nevertheless manages to stake her claim in space and time by speaking with great conviction, gravitas and strength. When Alison shows up, she shows up in force. Her ministry has lately involved passionate advocacy for immigrants in the Metro New York area and she has influenced local and state legislators. In short, she rocks.
She is now, as you can see, with child. I took this photo on a hot day in Charlotte, North Carolina where I caught Alison outside in a park and attacked her with my camera. Her loving hubby stood nearby while we chatted and I snapped her photo.
What’s great about this: it’s comfortable and non-constricting but it has a very chic cut and bold graphic design that communicates boldness on behalf of its wearer. Alison could have so easily gotten into Cutesy Land with cotton sundresses or pretty-girl colors but she’s doing it just right here: sophisticated black and white in a striking day dress that can easily be made more elegant for evening with dressier shoes, pulled-back hair, make-up and dressier earrings and (say) a cuff. For a low-key afternoon at the tail end of a denominational conference out for a walk in serious heat….! she’s looking sharp.

I love the expression “with child”, I wish more people would use it. Her dress is lovely, especially the neckline.

Any idea where to buy such a dress? I’m with child in a relatively unpopulated area with few maternity shopping options…
I’m not with child (nor is that in the cards for me), but I love the style and the dress! I’d totally steal the idea of that graphic pattern, the shoes, the hair, the neckline for a perfectly ordinary day and no belly. That looks like an outfit that will go far.
Looking at the pics, and considering Laura’s question, I wonder if this beautiful dress is even “Maternity” wear. I am petite, and she looks rather petite, tho dimensions are hard to judge without anything for scale. I live in a fairly populated area known for its “good shopping” and it was extremely difficult for me to find maternity sizes with petite dimensions. So, I just wore larger clothes thru my two pregnancies. The cut of the clothing made all the difference, of course. A-line was my friend, as was empire waists. A few peasant blouse things, a few stretchy tanks (xtra long) and it got me thru the pregnancy. Depending on your original size, maybe you just need to browse the womens’ section instead of the misses’ section; cuts are more generous there. The only truly maternity things I wore were jeans. I was able to wear most of my blazers too–unbuttoned of course! And thankfully my alb fit the whole time, tho I gave up on the cincture after about 8 mos because I just looked stupid with a tie in the middle.
If I had it to do over again I’d probably have bought even fewer new things, and spent some of that cash on better undergarments and MORE of the awesome products from MamaSpanx. The anxiety of body image made me buy way more than I actually got much use out of.
Now, clergy collars for lactating women whose bust size varies tremendously over the course of a Sunday morning? Don’t get me started!!! : )
