Who was it that said that the good preacher preaches with a copy of the Bible in one hand and a copy of the New York Times in the other?
At any rate, this photo tickled me. Not for obvious reasons, but because it was such a perfect visual representation of the wide range of current events — from the deep to the frivolous — that we as clergy need to be conversant with in order to stay relevant to our times:

If you don’t instantly recognize both of these images — and know why it’s a hilarious juxtaposition — you’re spending too much time in your study or at church!

Fleming Rutledge, I believe, has a book by that title.
Lol!
Karl Barth was the origin of that quote. [Thankya. - PB]
Apparently that one’s crossed denominational lines–a friend of mine told me at synagogue that the rabbi began his sermon with a rhetorical, “What should all Jews read on Saturday?” and a congregant responded, “The Arts section?”
Hillary looks as though she’s wondering whether it really suits her.
Excellent!
Deliver us from Beatrice…:)
[LOL! - PB]
There’s something wrong with this picture – the men should all have the seat up and the women should all have the seat down! [HA HA HA !!! Good one! - PB]
OK, I’ll go to bat for your thousands of clueless readers (surely I can’t be the only one…) WHAT IS THIS???
[JUDY! This is the photo taken of all the bigwigs watching the Bin Laden assassination unfold -- Photoshopped to look like they're all wearing Princess Beatrice's hideous Philip Treacy royal wedding hat. A hilarious mash-up of two important historic moments. - PB]
I love the NYT slideshow feature of people on the street. Say, how does a hat like this stay on the head? Really, is there a trick? And BTW, do many clergy wear hats, other than the required ones in some traditions (and no, not that turban look for men that I spotted today in the paper)
I don’t like making light of this photo. These U.S. operatives are watching people get killed.
Here’s a great shot of someone adopting Princess Bea’s fascinator at an event closer to you (copy and paste into a Web browser; it’s a Mass. newspaper’s photo): http://www.southcoasttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/misc?url=/misc/gallImgZm.html&img=%2Fapps%2Fpbcsi.dll%2Fbilde%3FNewTbl%3D1%26Site%3DNB%26Date%3D20110509%26Category%3DMEDIA19%26ArtNo%3D509009996%26Ref%3DPH%26Item%3D28%26maxH%3D600%26maxW%3D750%26border%3D0%26Q%3D80%26cb%3D500
[Actually, Carol, although I get your point, the fact is that they were not watching anyone get killed. They were watching a blank screen or something undistinguishable as they waited for news about what was transpiring. But again, gotchya. - PB]
