Would You Attend a BTFM Webinar?

Hi pigeons!

I was just in conversation with an Alban Institute consultant and we were talking about the possibility of my offering the occasional webinar on BTFM topics.

Have any of you attended webinars? I know very little about them. My understanding is that they can either be live seminars or video presentations that you purchase and watch. Am I right about that?

Would you attend a PeaceBang webinar?
If so, what topics would you most like to have addressed?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Certainly! What fun. And useful to SEE what you’re talking about. You describe things so well, and the pictures you include on this blog are quite helpful, but there’s something extra in seeing a “live demo”. As for topics – hmm. What immediately comes to mind isn’t very Alban-ish. I’m intrigued by your comments about “styling” garments, or wearing things in different combinations. I tend to get into a rut with the cardie-top-cute scarf-black pants ensemble. BOR-ING. I’d love to see you take some basic things and spiff ’em up. But I’d definitely watch.

  2. Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I’m not clergy but frequently find myself in lay leadership roles. I would love to learn more about projecting an appropriate authority, that is, how to assume an image of thoughtful, worshipful, respectful presence. Because I’m not normally in that kind of role and because I respect the role of clergy enough to not want to pretend to be a preacher, I struggle with being comfortable in these situations. Information about attitude, posture, body language, vocal projection, and level of personal familiarity when in a leadership role are all things I would find very useful. Thanks for asking.

  3. I’ve attended only one. It was live in the sense that the voices were in real time, though the visuals were nothing but slides. (That was OK for the topic, which was technical.) The webinar was then archived in some way and I received information on how to replay it. I’d love to attend a PeaceBang webinar on almost any topic you want to present.

  4. I WOULD attend an actual conference or seminar. I would not, however, attend a webinar. In my experience, even if the speaker/content is good, the medium is still too tedious to be worthwhile. (But you may be an exception!)

  5. I would also prefer to attend a live event. I might consider the webinar, but I don’t have any experience with that format. As for content, I agree that personalizing, or “finishing” an outfit might be helpful to ME, a loyal follower. For general consumption, maybe you need to go back to basics, “why this even matters,” or “the Spirituality of Dressing the Body.” That sounds awefully Alban-ish. 🙂

  6. Most webinars I’ve “attended” have been law-related and pretty dry, with someone essentially lecturing at the camera.

But I’ve also sometimes used “J. Random teenager demonstrates how to do a makeup trick or a dance” videos on YouTube.

Split the difference and you’re golden.

  7. I’ve participated in a number of webinars. The key is to make it worth the trouble of having the visual component. In other words, this is not like a family Skype call where just seeing the other person rocks your world. A business video conference call where we all just stare at fuzzy head shots of other people we don’t know is a waste of band width.

That said, I think your expertise is PERFECT for a visual platform. You could give live or slide examples of that magazine “Dos and Don’ts” feature (what mag was that, Glamour?). With advance registration, people could send in photos or live examples of “my favorite clerical/public speaking outfit” or “I like this, but it needs something – what do you recommend?” or “I’ve had the same hairstyle since 1997; what do you think would look good?”

    FWIW.

  8. I think a webinar would be fantastic! I would definitely “attend” if it were the type of video presentation to purchase and watch, rather than a live event. I think you and Kim Long – “The Worshipping Body” could pair up for an incredible look at fashion and “carrying yourself” in the worship space. Go get ’em, tiger. (:

  9. I’d pay. Or if you did a live demonstration lecture I’d go to that too.

  10. I’d rather do a live event, a retreat or something. I’m not opposed to travel but I’d rather not have to do a lot of planes trains automobiles, etc. Actually, I know a retreat center a half hour from a major airport in the midwest if you’re interested in planning something for the future. . . .

  11. Webinars are great for people like me, who can’t get away, as much as we would want to. And PB, you do great visuals, so there’s no question yours would be good.
