Can someone please explain this trend to me?

If you want warmth, you would want your arms covered, no?
And if you’re going to layer, this big old bulky thing over a shirt is just really not doing any women any favors, is it? The ones I’ve seen are usually made with BIG HUGE BUTTONS, too, and when worn on a busty gal they just super-emphasize the bust and make even the cutest gal look a bit like a stuffed sausage.
I bought a long, red one of these suckas at SteinMart in Florida last year while obviously under the influence of some sort of tropical ailment that strikes bargain shoppers and wore it out a few times while feeling distinctly hideous. It’s going in the Good Will pile and I believe there’s a much taller woman out there who can make it happen, but that woman is not me. The reason I thought I could make my short-sleeved sweater work was because it didn’t button way up on the neck and I mistakenly believed it was more flattering than the typical one pictured above. No such luck.

As a knitter, I’ve been a little dumbfounded as I’ve watched magazine after magazine come out over the past couple of years with sleeveless bulky sweaters, sleeveless parkas, sleeveless hoodies?! I am a practical gal, and could not come up with a real-life situation in which I could wear such a thing, so I chalked it up to high fashion insanity.
But this season they are all over the place, not just in mags but on real people! Looking darn cute! When they are not big and saggy like the ones in your pictures, and preferably not bulky, they can look darn good. Even on girls who are not twiggies.
If I ever make it into this constituency I will send a pic. I hope someone redeems this style for you, because I was just beginning to get converted…
Honestly, I never understood the whole ‘summer sweater’ thing, until I spent a summer in middle PA. Once the sun went down, you needed that summer sweater. or maybe even a jacket. Sometimes during the day it was cool enough to need that sweater. The short sleeves were ok (my arms weren’t cold), unless you needed to keep the mosquitos off.
This style makes my upper arms look worse and calls attention to them.
I had one of these, briefly, a year or so ago. I never liked it, but it got a compliment every single time I broke it out. Mystery to me.
I recently purchased this: http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/ribbed-tab-collar-cardigan/100805119/285 to wear over a sleeveless dress in a tropical climate–just couldn’t bring myself to let all that skin show. I really love this; i don’t know that it looked good, but it made me feel comfortable and flowy even though I was stuffed into that dress. Trying to figure out how to wear it to work, now. [I like that little shrug! I like that it is a nice, smooth weave – how it is in person? I totally don’t do upper arms, either, and wear little cottony sweaters and super-light weight jackets all summer over dresses. I’m always looking for ideas! – PB]
No pictures but I do like these in some incarnations. I love being warm but hate having sweater material the length of my arms. It gets wet, is hard to work in, etc. I love layering these sweaters.
I have a sweater kind of like the yellow one and it’s fine. I love the color (a deep heathered turquoise) and the sleeves are cap-sleeve length. The buttons at the neck help to ensure that it hangs right, and although it’s a casual look it’s not unflattering on me. It’s sort of a swing-coat style, but without a bunch of excess fabric. I like having a sweater that’s not going to leave me roasting indoors, but does provide some warmth during the cold weather.
in southern california, short-sleeved sweaters do make sense. it gets cool, but not necessarily cold enough to need a full on sweater. it helps keep the core warm.
and i’ve seen a few women ministers wear them and look fabulous. (not sure if I should name them here, but they are recent grads of meadville lombard – if you are reading this, send her a pic!)
I have one, too, and I have no idea why I bought it. I think I thought it would look cute, and it does – but mostly on the clothes hanger. (Labor outfit, maybe?)
