First Lady Rocks the Rock-Star-Earth-Mother Look

Ahhhhh, sigh.

Pigeons with a penchant for the flowy Stevie Nicks stuff? Here’s how it’s done, my darlings.

The fit is terrific: it’s flowy but it doesn’t envelop her in swaths of excess fabric. She can bend over without engaging in a Festival of Inappropriate Sharing (and don’t think that detail wasn’t carefully considered!). The skirt is long enough that she doesn’t have to worry about revealing anything north of her knees.
The palette is muted: she’s an elegant Earth Mother. A rainbow’s worth of hues would have tipped this over into Tackyland.

Styling is everything! She’s wearing fantastic accessories, did you notice? Observe. The style of the accessories is still slightly bohemian – bangles, slouchy boots. HOWEVAH, they’re not made of wood or plastic and she’s got her nails, hair and make-up done up beautifully. That’s how you balance the comfortable lines of a cute dress like that with the polish that you need for your professional and leadership image.

Dress by Sophie Theallet Fall Collection 2010

If Michelle O. had put on that dress, had frizzy or ungroomed hair, no make-up, a pair of thick-strap sandals or Mary Janes on, and big wooden or bead earrings she would have looked like hippie hell. And she would have looked a lot like too many female clergy I’ve seen.

  1. I think you can also rock this look with the black tights & dress or skirt & top in black & either gold or red belt bracelets & clogs. . . that’s what I wear a lot & get many compliments on the outfit.
