It’s Homecoming Sunday at my church. I can’t wait to see every again – -especially the little squirts who grow so much over the summer.
It is, however, my least favorite kind of weather: rainy and humid. Chilly enough to want to cover up, but warm and sticky enough that if you cover up too much you wind up soppy and bedraggled.
One word: cotton.
By the way? You can absolutely wear white after Labor Day. Just don’t wear summery lightweight fabrics in white. And for God’s sake, no white pumps. Ever.

No white pumps? I’m really happy, because they get marked up so quickly. But…what then does one wear with a white suit or dress? Please don’t say, a color to match your blouse or belt and purse, because one of my life disciplines is not to feel I need to have shoes in every color of the rainbow. What neutral color would go with a white outfit?
@ Christine – a nude pump is a girl’s best friend. They elongate the leg line and look chic with just about anything. If you don’t like that, try bronze shoes – they also go with just about anything, white included. In fact I’m wearing a pair of strappy bronze sandals at this very moment with dressy dark jeans and a pumpkin-orange blouse. [Bingo on the nude pump. – PB]
Doesn’t it make sense to wear summery lightweight fabrics if its still summery where you are? Or is the date on the calendar more important than the actual weather?
[Sorry, but it is more important if you want to be dressed professionally for the season. For instance, even though it’s going to be hot tomorrow, I would not wear a sundress or white cotton eyelet skirt. I’ll wear a lightweight cotton blouse and skirt in something other than white, or brown cotton trousers. Brown sandals with a chunky heel are fine. Beachy sandals with a flower on them would not be fine. – PB]
Love my white (cream?) cords for autumn and winter. And I agree with Gina about nude pumps. Nude or tan or beige or chocolate, whatever best matches your own skin tone, pumps for winter, sandals for the summer. Essential!
My mother’s annual comment about white when I was growing up: “It’s fall, honey. No white shoes unless they have wheels on them. No white belts unless you’re in the band.” I defy these rules, but I still hear them in my head every Labor Day!
