Well, chickens, Kate brought it up, so now we can talk about it!
For avoidance of heat-stick-thighs under a skirt with no hose, I like something loverly I just discovered at a funny little neighborhood beauty supply: thigh-length leggings. Like hose chopped off above the knee, and finished with nice stretch lace. Voila! I will not stick to myself under my cute little sundresses this summer when my church has its booth at the outdoor arts fair!!
You can, of course, make your own – by chopping off a pair of hose above the knee. Just know that at some point, you WILL get runs. Not that anyone but you will see them!
Kate, you are so right. PeaceBang thinks it’s just ridiculous that Spanx charges something like $25 for the same darn thing, and she knows from firsthand experience that even Spanx run.
And the Barely There brand doesn’t feel like it’s barely there at all. It feels like you’ve been stuffed into sausage casing.
Cotton bike shorts also work, darlings. And Kate, my sweet, what was the brand of your little lace-finished thingies?
PeaceBang would like to remind you all that ladies don’t sweat… we glisten.

Pettipants have been my salvation in summertime for years. Many major department stores sell them and they are also available through catalog outlets such as Vermont Country Store and others. They are lightweight, don’t compress the thighs, and come in a couple of different lengths. I like the short ones best. And they don’t get rucked up like a slip underneath a skirt.
Huh! Read and learn. I’m partial to a little powder myself.
Ah, and a similar (but less constraining) result will come from a split slip. You have to look for them a bit, but MUCH more comfortable than bike shorts….especially if you’re lucky and find a cotton one.
I love spanx but I also hate to pay that much. I have recently discovered that that Sara Blakely the women who started spanx has released a line of products for Target called Assets and it is half the price.
I have started using a “split” type of slip that you can get anywhere they sell regular slips. It’s kind of like wearing shorts but it’s loose – good for when you’re wearing a skirt that you don’t need to wear something really constricting underneath.
About ladies and sweating – my mother could quote my great grandmother, who ran a finishing school for young ladies back in the day. It went something like:
men perspire
women glisten
ladies become comfortably warm
This was from at least 60 years ago, well before central air, and of course, there was nothing comfortable about it.
If you’re willing to go barelegged, Monistat makes a pleasantly slippery gel pretty much for the purpose of eliminating ‘thigh-rub-irritation.’
I used it all last summer, and I wear skirts all summer, with great satisfaction. It’s also good if you do a lot of bike riding or other thigh-rubbing exercise.
I’m partial to cotton bike shorts myself, although have also found that cutting control top nilons off just above the knees works well under a knee length or longer skirt.
on the sweating thing, my middle/high school ballet teacher (an amazingly beautiful oldish lady) used to say dancers don’t sweat, they shine (as we sweated right through our leotards and tights)
I’m a fan of a product called BodyGlide that you can find in bike shops — it rubs on like deodorant to stop the chafe like a charm, and it’s made of natural ingredients. Plus, it’s marketed for athletic types, so you don’t have to suffer fat-thigh-shame in the checkout line. Definitely recommended.
A word of warning about those thigh high pantyhose! They can be terrific, but be sure to test them out around the house and in shoes for a while before you take them out in public. I’ve got several pair and one pair will wear just fine for about an hour, and then suddenly start slooching down towards the ankle. INCESSANTLY. No amount of tugging will keep them up. They’ll stay put for a few minutes, and then go sliding down again. These are the kind with the little bit of rubber on the inside to help keep them up. I’ve had this problem with several pair, but not all. Beats me!
