Underboob

Just a PSA for you ladies out there: when you raise your arms up, your bra cup should not hike up and show underboob. If that’s happening, you’re in the wrong bra size.

PeaceBang continues to despair about proper foundation garments among the clergy. She attended a fancy event some weeks ago where one of her colleagues was obviously braless, with results that were both sloppy, inappropriate and distracting.

If you must go braless for medical reasons, it is still possible to wear something that prevents all sorts of flopping around. Feminist commitments aside, no one’s dignity or freedom is served by anyone walking around looking like she has two muskrats fighting it out under her silk shirt.

For heaven’s sake.

  1. “two muskrats fighting under a silk shirt!” Hah! I love the image that gives me ( well, not “love” exactly but you get what I mean! ) Goodness, being big enough to look like that if I wandered around bra-less I can’t imagine ever doing it….far too uncomfortable! [Well, small muskrats are equally distracting. Even tiny baby muskrats. – PB]

  2. I’ve recently found True & Co., an online bra store with LOTS of choices. (https://trueandco.com) They seem to have an attentive staff who actually pay attention to your personal bra likes/dislikes and needs, and then they make suggestions. You can return the bras you don’t want without paying postage, so you can go back and forth until you find one you like. TONS of brands, most of which I’ve never heard of.

  3. I am extremely distracted by muskrat fights. I was too stunned to say anything when I saw this happening on the bosom of a colleague. What DO you say?!

I have appreciated the skills of good bra-fitters. My Nordstroms gal was was AWESOME. She measures you, and then you stand in the little dressing room, and she brings you lovely things to try. She asks if the bra is comfortable and you like it. If she thinks you’re kidding yourself, she will (gently) tell you.

  4. I second Rev. Gidget’s endorsement of a good bra-fitter. I’ve had greatest success with either Nordstrom’s or an independent shop that advertises that they carry a wide range of sizes. I’ve heard so many horror stories of bad bra-fitting experiences at Victoria’s Secret that I avoid them like the plague.

I never would have found the right bra without a fitter, because it turns out for some of us, applying the standard formula published by the various bra manufacturers gives wildly inaccurate results.

  5. THANK YOU! I spend a ridiculous amount of money on bras, but I feel great in them and am not worried about any mishaps. Spend the $$ on the bras, ladies, and even your Target top will look fabulous!

I just read this yesterday and it is well worth a read, if you enjoy the kind of snark and slightly uncouth language found in BuzzFeed articles. (Which I do.) The moral of the story: get measured, try things on, and don’t buy something that isn’t comfortable in the store, because it should feel good from the start.

  7. Those silly muskrats…

As a woman who has recently gained a great deal of weight, find the right foundation garment has been a challenge…and I have found that spending money on the proper foundation garment makes everything else look better.

I can now never “unsee” the image of those muskrats…thanks for that. 😉
