Style + Image Resolutions

OKAy, everyone! Let’s all line up to greet 2014 together and make some Secular New Year’s Resolutions that you may or may not intend to keep (because some of us hate the very idea of resolutions, having traveled enough times around the sun to know that the only resolutions worth making are those that include a clause about “getting up and trying again when we inevitably lapse or fail.”).

How about some personal style or self-care resolutions? Something simple, like, “I will not wear thick, spongey white gym socks with sneakers and a Geneva gown in 2014.”

Or, “I resolve not to match my eyeshadow to my scarves in 2014.”

Or, “I resolve to break my straight hair obsession in 2014 and will stop committing flat iron abuse on my poor, fried tresses.”

Or, “I will stop forgetting to clean under my fingernails during gardening season or will at least take up a dark nail polish habit to compensate.”

Leave them here, pigeons!

  1. I resolve to stop rubbing my eyes at work, (I do this when stressed) resulting in smeared eye makeup. I will punch my stuffed Dr. Who Dalek instead. But not while I am on the phone with a parishioner – did that and had to stuff the thing into my desk drawer because it was saying, “exterminate, exterminate!” Love your blog.

  2. I think the best beauty related resolution I could make would be to get back to yoga classes – a bit more flexibility, a lot more relaxation and better posture would be a huge improvement on my currently hobbity self. [YES! I don’t do yoga but I do my own sort of stretchy thing, and I am SO HOBBITY right now.- PB]

  3. I resolve to experiment with color combinations. I am so afraid of mixing colors that I tend to wear all neutrals except for one item that is colored (plus a matching necklace most times). I have admired others who I saw wearing pink shirt/blue sweater or similar combinations and I realize I can probably get a larger variety of outfits out of my closet if I stop being afraid of multiple colors. (Baby step: button down yellow shirt with clunky green fair trade necklace my supervising minister gave me) [Fabulous resolution! Share photos! – PB]

  4. I resolve to figure out what to do about my hair – humidity-sensitive long hair that hasn’t been styled in mumbledysomething years; the end result is very much “crunchy granola lady,” and I think I need something a bit more professional (even though this is very much my “day off” persona.)

And after I figure out what I want to do, then I need to do it. [Great resolution!! Make sure to take Before and After photos so we can walk the journey with you! If you let us and I hope you will. Image changes are big! – PB]

  5. Change my earings more than once a quarter. I tend to put them in and forget them, and I have lots of lovely bits of silver that almost never get morn as a result.

  6. I resolve to get out once a day. I have the bad habit of hibernating in my house–get back from work and STAY, and never leave unless forced on a day off. I have a new neighbor friend who is also a single mom, who needs to laugh, so we’ll explore or visit together. This is a great question, PB! Thank you.
