Great Column On Clergy Wardrobe Malfunctions

Pastor Margot Starbuck wrote a charming article about the special challenges of serving as women of the cloth. Enjoy, and thanks to Alert Pigeon Lindy Lou for bringing it to my attention.

  1. In preparation for a big funeral, I took my alb home to wash. I didn’t send it through the washer and dryer all by itself. As I was vesting, a colleague (female, happily) pointed out that a pair of my underwear was static-clinging to the alb. (Thank goodness she noticed before the service!).

I have also, at times, forgotten that I was wearing only a Janie – not a full clergy shirt – under my suit jacket or sweater, and started to take off my jacket to vest in the sacristy, while surrounded by male colleagues and child/youth servers. (I do not have Gwyneth Paltrow abs, btw.) [HA HA HA!! This made me hoot, all alone in the empty church tonight. – PB]
