Darlings, have you noticed that big top buns are ALL the rage right now? They’re a great look for ministry, and for preaching if you’re into up do’s. As you may recall, PeaceBang has gone from being a girl who has always had short hair to a gal with much longer hair, and she has a lot of fun playing with her new long locks. Hair is so interesting if you’ve never had any before. It’s a permanent accessory in a way that short hair simply is not. I’m always amazed when I have to keep it on my head all night: I always feel like I should be taking it off like my earrings or watch. When I had short hair the big struggle was to get it to have a style every morning, and I had to wash and style it every day to get it to look like anything. With longer hair, there is no need to shampoo it every day, and styling happens much less with blow-drying and the use of products than with accessories and creative ideas.
I prefer to wear my hair up for work. The chignons that I favor for preaching may age me, but I’m not trying to look younger when I preach or preside. I’m trying to look professionally polished.
The sock bun frenzy has been impossible for me to miss, so I thought I’d try a sock bun of my own. I bought a little mesh donut from K-Mart for $5, watched a YouTube tutorial* for gals with shorter, layered hair, and had at it.
Here’s what the bun donut looks like:
It was really super easy. I put my hair in a high ponytail, smoothed it out and held it up vertically and slid it into the donut hole. Then I split my hair into two sections, front and back, and flopped the hair over the donut. I slid a second ponytail holder over the the hair, securing it loosely over the donut, then pulled the hair out gently, poofing it and arranging it to cover the donut. I wrapped loose ends around the base of the bun and inserted a few hair pins to secure the whole business. Voila.
You could make take it from church to a party with a little fleur. [This isn’t really a good look for me: I look like I’m ready to take the stage as Bloody Mary in “South Pacific.”– PB]
But then again, who’s going to a party during LENT?
*Thanks to Miss Schmidt for her helpful YouTube video!

Highly recommended for the making of smooth buns is the hairagami. Should also be available at drugstore or online. (It also makes a nifty spiral bun, but I generally make a smooth one.
You inspired me to try something similar this morning, but since I don’t have a donut (or sacrificial sock), and I do have more hair than I know what to do with, I built the bun around a hair scrunchy, which worked surprisingly well. And eight hours later it’s still more or less where I put it, which is pretty good for a “hair did.”
Thanks!
Oh, my stars and garters. I’m having flashbacks to when I was lawyerin’ in the 80s. I had mesh donuts (we called them “rats”) for buns, mesh snakes for side rolls and French twists, and this mesh bump for a neck bun. Couple that with the man-suits we wore, with those remarkably stupid silk rosettes and skinny, floppy silk bow “ties” at our necks, and, well, let’s just say I hope the only thing that returns from the 80s are the rats.
Now that I’m nearly 60, long hair is not an option – it’s shiny and healthy until it gets to be about chin length, then it breaks and splits and turns odd colors. I’m sure it has to do with how old the hair is when it gets that long. So, it’s short, and gradually getting shorter – and, yes, it must be fussed with daily. Oh, well. [This all made me laugh. Thank you. – PB]
I’m growing out what was a very short pixie cut. I loved that cut, but it’s time for a change. I’m now at that terrible stage where my bangs are too long to wear as bangs and too short to do anything with. Ugh. Oh, how I long for the day when I can pull my hair into a ponytail! Anyone have good advice for the awkward growing stages? [Hmmm, you better send me a pic! – PB]
When I began my internship, I decided to wear my very long hair up in the pulpit. I called it the Bun of Authority. Always good to know where your authority comes from, right? [LOL! Love that.I call my teased crown French twist “The Full Adele” when I get it right. – PB]
Oh, I had a horrifying incident with a visible “sock” and I am afraid to try again! Perhaps there are not enough pins in all the world to allow me to feel confident in a sock bun.
I deliberately adopted a ‘bun of authority’ when I started preaching, to prevent myself doing the ‘little girly hair twirly of nervousness’ thing.
The nervousness has reduced now, but I keep the bun.
