Wristlets

I always laugh when I see gals bustling about with those tiny little Coach purses tucked under their slim arms. My friend Rachel calls them “armpit warmers.” They’re cute if you’re a petite woman (way out of scale if you’re not) but for heaven’s sake, what can one actually FIT in those things? A breath mint and toothpick?

Not for moi. And also not for moi those silly little items known as “wristlets,” or so PeaceBang once believed. However, having received one as a gift, PeaceBang has changed her mind (yes, this phenomenon actually does occur, but with the frequency of Haley’s Comet, so you don’t want to miss it when it happens)!

This handy little accessory fits my smart phone, a few credit cards and a stash of cash, a lipstick and hand sanitizing packets. And I am so grateful for it this past week as I have been running in and out of meetings and the hospital a lot and tired of carrying my heavy bag through the corridors. Our local hospital is under construction and there’s no parking anywhere near the building any more, which leads me to ask the esteemed minister of the church across the street from my most local hospital (who I know to be a devoted Pigeon), “JENNIE, can I PLEASE park in your church parking?”

I type this very post with a warm rice and lavender wrap around my neck because I am feeling a bit Quasimodo-like (“Quasimodish?”) after some weeks of Heavy Bag Abuse. It’s so hard to forget that we’re not pack animals, isn’t it, dears? I am fond of stashing my laptop, a few books, several other small electronic devices, a fat little make-up bag, a bottle of water, and God Knows What Else into my bag and running around with it all day. Not good for my left shoulder. I sleep on my left side and tense the same shoulder up while I sleep, all with the end result that I wind up pathetically scrinched and in pain, which I ignore, and then I become a chronically cranky lady.

So, thanks to my cute little wristlet I am learning the joys of traveling light and giving my back and shoulders a much-needed break.

And for free because I want to share the beauty of our New England autumn with you:

  1. I have a small bag very much like a wristlet that came with a purse I purchased. I keep some of my must have items in it and there’s room for my wallet and cell too. I no longer use the purse it came with, but this small bag travels from work tote to purse and occasionally makes a solo appearance. Very handy and makes for quick bag changes!

  2. More than a year ago I switched from my various combinations of wallets, purses, tote bags, laptop bags, and makeup bags to a small cross-body bag in my favorite go-with-everything color (red). It holds all my essentials–phone, keys, inhaler, money and cards, pen, lip gloss, powder–but weighs so little that I don’t even notice it. For the rest of the stuff (books, Ipad, notebooks, hand lotion, chargers), I mostly use a Tom Bihn messenger bag. When I need to look more professional than that, I switch to a leather tote. I’ve been so happy with this solution–I always have what I need with me, without back pain or forgetting something.

    Blessings!

  3. I love me some wristlets! I have a wallet in my purse, with all my various cards — credit and rewards. But I always have a small wristlet, too, that holds my cash and my debit card. It’s great for whenever I’m just “running in” somewhere!

  4. I’m a wristlet gal from way back. They are the best, most practical things ever. So great when you want to be hands-free.
