Floral Clericals: Or, I Died A Little Inside Today

The Rev. Laura Everett got me out of the Bat Cave by Tweeting, “Sending out the PeaceBang bat light on this one,” with a link to this article about how girl pastors can skip around doing God’s work in pretty flower collars! Should we have baskets of strawberries on our arms, too? How about a red cape with a hood?

I feel fairly certain that, were I on my deathbed and Holly Hobby showed up to pray with me, I would use one of my last breaths to admonish her for her ridiculous, distracting clericals.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the collar is not an item of clothing to be personalized in these inane ways. It is part of a uniform that identifies one with a particular profession. Wear it or don’t wear it, but don’t mangle it in some dreadful, confusing mash-up of Church + Gap.

The Ikat one on the left just looks like a mess, as does the model (is she doing missionary work with New Mexico hipsters? I don’t get it). The Rev. Laura Ingalls Wilder on the right is saying, “I’ll preside over the Eucharist and then PONY RIDES FOR EVERYONE!”

  1. AMEN!

What’s next? Floral police uniforms? [Right! Also, when are women going to realize that “feminize” does not mean “transform into some simpering expression of girlishness?” -PB]

  2. In the 60s all the male clergy (all we had then) wore paisley or other hippie fabrics shirts and often decorated collars. I knew one who had the local bead artist on the reservation – make him a beaded collar. [Feelin’ groovy! No nos moveran! – PB]

  3. I would go to church way more often if there were pony rides, but that doesn’t mean you’re not dead-on with your critique!

  4. Bike manufacturers figured out that “shrink it and pink it” didn’t really work for women’s bikes either. Learn from Trek, people. Learn from Trek.

  5. Years ago I shopping at a church convention and had to leave the room when a pink polka dot clergy shirt arrived.

  6. Black shirt, white collar for me — white shirt on Easter maybe. Love your comment on my first note PB.

  7. The consensus in this clergy couple is that they look like pajamas – both styles.

  8. The Laura Ingalls Wilder look brings to mind an old joke. Show an architect a pile of Horsesh** and he/she will immediately start jumping up and down excitedly asking “Where is the pony?” If people start thinking or asking about ponies, they haven’t heard the message of the gospels and you know that you are in trouble.

Save your money for a fine woolen red cape with a hood that can be used when you go to the symphony or can help you make an absolutely smashing entrance at holiday parties.

  9. Me: These are clerical shirts!

    Husband: No, they’re not.

No, they’re not, and Laura Ingalls Wilder, were she a pastor, would have worn sensible black. Or maybe brown or gray.

Am now imagining Lady Pastor Laura, and loving it. So, I guess these shirts are good for something . . .

  10. This makes me cry a little inside. You can be tasteful and feminine without being tacky and juvenile. That is what well-tailored and designed female clergy shirts are for.

  11. That poor misguided girl, I always take off my clericals before bedtime, jammies should never have collars on them.

  12. Eewwww…

I have actually seen one very muted print (reverse Hawaiian print on a Hawaiian) that I liked, but in general, no. It’s like a cassock. Maybe white or grey for the tropics.

But these? What were they smoking?
