An alert reader sent me this photo of a Bishop Anglican Church of Canada.
I said, “Is he MARRIED?” Because seriously, what a dreamboat! Sorry, Mrs. Bishop! Give him a big kiss of peace for me!
So he looks great, right? Really perfectly turned out in every way. Great glasses, too.
But …. BISHOP! THOSE AREN’T SNEAKERS I SEE UNDER THAT ROBE, DO I?
Thy rod and they staff, they comfort me, but NO SNEAKS WITH VESTMENTS! Such a shonda because he gets such a big, shiny Halo of Praise for everything else. He looks smart and with-it and cool and super groomed and like a church guy I would want to hang out with whether I was a Church Babe or not.
The kicks are actually great, they’re just obviously too informal for the occasion. Maybe he left his formal shoes in the rental car or something.
It looks like he is wearing shorts because I see skin above his ankle socks. I bet this was some event where everyone else was dressed in shorts. Gold tournament? Picnic? Something where they held a service and then he took of the vestments and had some fun. [I’m sure! I’m told it was the induction of a new priest. What they did after that, I don’t know but it looks like a gorgeous setting. – PB]
Yup… they’re sneakers. I know the guy. Unlikely that he forgot his “real shoes” in a rented car. And he does have a unique sense of style.
Let me tell you something, honey. I live in the US, near the Canadian border, and we get tons of Canadian visitors down here to spend their loonies. You know how you can tell who’s Canadian? The men dress better. Step one: look at the man’s shoes; if they aren’t athletic sneakers, flipflops, or sandals with socks, he’s Canadian. A theory that’s been borne out by a study of accents.
Yes, he is a bishop, one of my bishops, the event was likely taking place at a resort area where shorts for the reception would be absolutely okay…tough gig, eh?
He is married, sorry PB, and his wife has as delightful a sense of style as he does. PLUS he’s a very sweet man…awesome sense of humour and he does the bishop bling very well!
Yup, know him, last spoke on a trip back to Canada in June, and know that he has a renowned sense of fashion among the House of Bishops. As Andrea says, he does the bishop bling well indeed! Great guy, I enjoy his company very much. Would have been a hot summer day, I’m guessing, otherwise he’s usually more formal.
Are those bracelets I spy on his wrists? What do we think of male clergy and jewelry, PB? He looks very approachable and lovely. So glad he is apparently as beautiful inside as outside! Much joy and peace to him and his flock.
I will admit to having worn sneakers with vestments, when I was leading worship outdoors and the lawn was a tad squishy-wet. It would have damaged my nice pair of Sunday-best leather shoes. But I’m thinking that lawn looks dry.
@Derek: When I buy a new pair of dress shoes, I hold onto the old pair – usually still decent – for such squishy-wet occasions.
I’m pretty sure that the fascia (his sash) is misplaced there. The fascia is worn with the cassock (what constitutes choir dress for Anglicans–at least as close to RCC choir dress as it gets.) The alb and stole are vestments, the cassock and fascia are clericals. They look awkward combined here–ESPECIALLY when is pulling the bishop card and using his crozier.
First world liturgical problems…
