Rocking The Vests: Adopting and Adapting Nun’s Habits

On the other hand, I have found, with the assistance of PB reader Ann Fontaine, a monastic community of Episcopalian women who rock awesome vests as a religious habit in The Community of the Holy Spirit.

Sorry I can’t download the big version of the image but you get the idea. Long, red, stand-up collar. Very Pentecosty (which couldn’t be more appropriate for the Community of the Holy Spirit, of course).

In this article, Sister Catherine Grace writes about the sisters’ discernment process around modifying the habits to communicate who they are in the contemporary world. They talked about issues of image, accessibility to those with whom they want to be in relationship, and ethical concerns around sustainability and worker justice.

The sisters just dedicated a new, greener convent on NYC’s upper West Side and we wish them every blessing on their ministry, their farming and their community. Keep the light on, sisters, ’cause I’m coming to visit sometime. You sound like all kinds of awesome.

You can “like” The Community of the Holy Spirit on Facebook here.
