Kathie Lee: The Story Of The Beige Girl

I saw KLG today while getting my nails done (I know! TOUGH LIFE, right?) and she worried me. The photo below was taken a few years ago and she has obviously kept having plastic surgery such as facelift, brow bone, rhinoplasty etc since then from Wellesley Cosmetic Surgery – Before and After of the face is the proof. Her face looks scalded pink (chemical peels, no doubt), tight and pulled, and she has had really bad cheek implants put in that totally cut her face. She looks desperate and miserable and it just makes me sad.

Aside from turning herself into a plastic mutant version of a woman, though, Kathie Lee Gifford has a habit that I think many of us fall into, and that is taking the “neutral look” way too far. She’s doing it in the photo: everything matches! Her top matches the other top. The make-up matches the shirt. Her hair matches her face. Her lipstick matches her hair. There’s no contrast, nothing to announce that there’s a person present — it all just melds together in a nothing kind of way.

Today, KLG was wearing a terrible sort of ivory-peach top with lace details — gee, I wish I had a photo of it or could draw it. The thing I wanted to point out to you is that the shirt had big designs running down the center of the shirt in a vertical row from the neckline (which was a very unflattering and dull one). No problem with those designs alone, but they also ran down the 3/4 length sleeve. As a result, KLG had three huge lace appliques in a row running across her front horizontally, chopping her completely in half and making her look huge.

She’s such a shapely woman and it was such a terrible thing to do to herself. So pay attention to patterns, ducklings. When you put your arms by your sides you do not want to create a line that bells you out by a foot from your waist. No one needs that.

If I was Kathie Lee’s stylist I would cut her lanky hair, get a hairdresser to give it some volume, have her lay off the chemical peels, give her a more dramatic eye and make her make-up more sophisticated in general. I would put her in gorgeous, sexy suits with fitted jackets in a deep V neckline — and a better bra. I would throw a bunch of huge chains around her neck — she can DO BLING! – and give her some killer stillettos. She would totally own the world.

KLG, call me. Stop with the beige already!

  1. After a year, I finally put my seminary graduation picture in a frame. Oh my!!! My hair was very long and totally shapeless. I usually pulled it back or put it into a bun so I really never looked at it critically. NOW…it is an inch or two above my shoulders and has some flair to it. I have received many compliments on how it looks now.

As I looked at KLG’s picture, I saw myself even tho she is styling her hair…somewhat. Unfortunately she has a very sad look about her that shouldn’t be. I hope she sees your comments and thinks about updating her total look.

I am serving in a very small town, and the dress can be quite causal. I still take a look at what I am wearing and ask myself, “What would PB say?” Some days I change the outfit. I have a ways to go yet. I’m working on it…I really am.

  2. From the times I’ve seen her with low cut dresses she needs a better bra and I was going to say at her age not even show the cleavage it was so ugly but perhaps that was because of her bra. Because I have seen older ladies pull off nice cleavage.

  3. It would also help if her outfit didn’t match the upholstery. Somebody slipped up in the production values.

  4. This article was a great reminder to me this morning when I dressed in dark purple shell, lilac shirt, and med brown pants. I chose jewelry that was bright and attention getting to make a contrast with the blander colors and earrings. THANKS for the tip.

  5. Also, using sunscreen on one’s neck and decolleté is a MUST. Those areas and the hands age fastest. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on those places, ladies – and gentlemen on the neck and back of the hands. (Chest is less of an issue for guys – but the decollete can age fast – and yes, she needs bra help too.) Keep sunscreen next to your day cream or moisturizer or by the door to remind yourself. Or both. Necks age faster than faces!

  6. Reminds me of what Jean Kerr once longed to tell a salesclerk: “I can’t wear beige because I *am* beige.”
