Not a Good Thing

Dear Martha,

We understand. It’s a special event but not so special that you need to do it up in a cocktail dress or gown. However, like most ministers, you do need to look polished and in charge of your own image any time you know there will be cameras around.

The problem here is that you’re drowning in tons of shiny fabric on top and then you have these shiny little legs that I almost thought were naked because the tone of the pants so closely matches your skin. Don’t scare me like that, Martha! So your proportions are way off, and the pointy little shoes don’t do any favors for you on that front, either.

There’s no rule that you have to match your pants and your shoes to your hair, Martha. In fact, it’s a bit weird that you did that.

Swap the whole thing out next time. Wear a classic trouser in the navy — something a bit flowing and classic with the pointed toe of the shoe just peeking out at the hem. Then put the champagne color up top (I hate the color and wouldn’t recommend it, but if you must)… in a sexy fitted camisole and beautiful blazer that actually, you know, FITS your body shape and flatters it. Your body shape is not square, as it appears to be here. And get some help accessorizing honey, because that big handful of pearls someone threw at your head just look like a mess. The multiple strand necklace look is really wonderful but it takes a certain touch.

Finally, Martha, are you holding that purse for a six-year old friend of yours? Perhaps a grandchild? No? That’s your purse? Well, I guess nobody ever told you : grown-up ladies of a certain size (like over size 0) don’t carry teensy beensy little purses, as they further throw off our proportions.
Get yourself a nice clutch. It will really help matters.

And not to further upset you, Martha, because I’m a fan, but that jacket should do prison time for what it’s done to you here.

Love, PeaceBang

  1. Amen. The way the picture presented in my browser, I could not see the hem of the pant, and I thought, “GOOD HEAVENS, Martha is wearing a micro-mini?” I’m not much of an accessorizer, but I knew there was something off about both necklace AND bag.

  2. whew – I have a jacket like that – champagne colour too with pants – I knew I didn’t like how I looked but wasn’t sure why – thanks –

  3. Once I got over the shock of thinking she didn’t have pants on, I was left wondering why women of a certain age color their hair that color and wear clothes to match, blech.

  4. My fave part is how she’s not standing on the “x.”. I’m sure she dislikes taking these staged publicity photos as much as I dislike looking at people who look uncomfortable in the staged publicity photos.

  5. I think it would look better with a longer jacket/coat. I agree with PB about carrying a clutch bag instead.
