I was reading Religion Dispatches and clicked on an article written by Joanna Brooks here:
She looks groomed, polished, lovely, contemporary, and totally sharp. She’s looking straight at the camera, the background is nice, and the whole effect is impressive and welcoming.
Just what you want in a headshot.
(I don’t care if you like her necklace or not; that’s not the point. The whole effect is the point).
Pastors, please take note. I’ve seen some really atrocious headshots lately: so close-up as to distort the face, spectacles featuring so prominently that the face is almost invisible, greasy bangs, just wonky, unprofessional, FaceBook-type operations in major publications! Augh!
My congregation is in the process of calling a minister. On Sunday, the ministerial search committee announced the candidate and displayed her head shot. In the photo she looks warm, professional, and open. It was a lovely introduction to her.
The necklace may not be someone’s cup of tea, but at least it’s SOMETHING. It’s not a bland, boring button front or v-neck. It’s not distracting, but it shows some personality. It makes it look like she’s not just posing for a photo, but that she’s a real person. I feel this photo is interrupting a moment where she’s having a discussion or on her way somewhere; she is a person in action, not just an image. [YEA! – PB]
