Because I Promised

So I saw my colleague, the Rev. David Pettee at a dinner at General Assembly. “You look different!” I said. He was looking super-fab, and very much reminding me of the ever-splendidly dressed actor Kevin Spacey (my big celebrity crush).

Duh, David had lost about 50 lbs. and gotten rid of his facial hair. I said, “You look HOT, David, and I plan to shamelessly objectify you on my blog!” And so here I am, and here’s a Before and After of the good Rev:

Trip to Ghana, obviously not a dress-up affair.

General Assembly, Minneapolis, 2010.

Lookin’ good in the neighborhood!

  1. Hm. Well, disregarding the outfit (which is much nicer on the second pic), and the obvious health benefits of losing that much weight, I actually think he looked really good in the beard. Better than without (sorry, David ;). A matter of taste, I guess, but I really like a nice, well-groomed beard.

  2. I’m with you, Maria! The beard is actually quite nice. And yes– grooming is completely key. If it were scraggly or thin, it wouldn’t look that great, but since it’s carefully kept, it looks professional and frames his face well.

  3. In the first picture, he also looks more comfortable and relaxed. Happier. I find the first picture a lot more attractive!

  4. The corporate clothes aren’t my favorite style, but I think he looks great 50 pounds lighter and the second picture is very handsome (and the clothes are of course very appropriate to his role and the setting–but oh how sad that men’s professional clothes are so dull). I do think the beard was becoming. Maybe he should try it sometime with his new, thinner face.

Poor David. You didn’t know what you were letting yourself in for, did you? Congratulations on dropping 50 pounds–I admire your perseverance!

  5. Glad I’m not alone in my preference for the beard!

    Congrats on losing 50 pounds–wow. 🙂

  6. Another vote for the beard. Weight loss is great, however. How did you recognize the man? He looks so different.

  7. Personally I’m a sucker for a tie. I’d prefer the “new” guy come see me in the hospital, personally.

  8. Well, I definitely wouldn’t want the t-shirt look to visit me in the hospital. But as PB said, those clothes were appropriate for the occasion.

  9. I usually don´t like beards on men. But I like it on this guy. It makes him look much more approachable than the – in my opinion too polished- outfit on the second photo.
If he were for selling properties or car- go for it. But as a minister I prefer the more approachable outfit. Not a holiday outfit but an outfit that has the message “Hi, I am your pastor, I am approachable yet professional”

  10. Nope, I’m afraid I’m anti-beard. I think he looks a good 10 years younger without it. If your beard is going gray but your hair isn’t, you should definitely shave the beard.
