Fabric artist Jan Laurie wrote to me today to ask if I would promote her work here, and I am most happy to do so. Her website is here, and I think her stoles are beautiful!! Tell her PeaceBang sent you.
I must be honest and say that I think there are a lot of really ugly stoles out there, stoles that try to do too much, stoles that are so much about the “journey” of the wearer or the creativity of the artist that I think of them as “Therapy Stoles” and fail to see any the connection between them and the Church. I see too many stoles that just look messy and like a child’s art project, and too many that look seriously out of place in beautiful, formal sanctuaries. Jan Laurie’s work is simple, elegant, Christian, liturgical. Halo of praise.
If you want to get me one, I’d LOVE the white/ecru one for weddings and Easter! I’m 5’3″, in case you were wondering.

Oh, PB, you’re right about the ugly, clumsy stoles out there, but these are GORGEOUS. Wow.
I hope your mention of the site brings Jan all the orders she can handle!
Those are really nice. The colors remind me of Eric Carle’s books (e.g. “the hungry caterpillar”). I mean that in a good way. Very colorful and timeless.
I have four of her stoles (2 two-sided stoles) and they are BEAUTIFUL. The texture, the colour, the sparkle, they are GORGEOUS and always garner comments.
Jan Laurie rocks!
I have the green one and absolutely love it! It’s beautifully handmade – my most favorite ordination gift from my husband!
Totally agree – like the ones with balloons or whatnot. These are gorgeous and appropriate!
I have had two of her double-sided stoles for several years now and never fail to get compliments on them. They are exquisite! I whole-heartedly recommend them to anyone wanting a classy, beautiful work of fabric art.
I have one of Jan’s stoles (double-sided, purple and white) and LOVE it. The detail and thought put into them is amazing. Beautiful quality stoles are worth the investment.
Totally agree with you on the stole being ugly at times! I always go for the simpler designs, although if they are as good as yours I would not mind recommending them to our minister : )
