Hair Clinic, Part III

Pigeons.

I tried.
I let it air dry.
I did not brush it.
Sometimes, I brushed it.
I conditioned it. I used curling products.
I used sponge rollers.

It never looked anywhere as decent as it looked in that ONE halfway decent photo I took on the day I had it cut.
I learned a lot about curly hair.
And I learned that the cut I got was just wrong, wrong, wrong for my texture and type of hair.

Live and learn.

I am a professional. My hair has to look groomed, and it was not looking groomed. I had to keep it in a wide headband in order for it not to look like a frizzy, bedraggled mess (except for a few miraculous moments when it wasn’t — but those were rare).

I realized upon close inspection this morning that the hair was quite VERY unevenly, which was, of course, an interesting discovery. Nice to pay someone $50 to cut your hair unevenly!

Given that I live an hour from the salon, I visited my local MasterCuts tonight for a blow-out and decided to ask the stylist there to trim the cut and help redeem the shape from “square” to something more flattering. I swear I am not lying when I tell you that it was looking like Benjamin Franklin hair.

She did. She blew it straight. My heart sank into my feet as I realized I had one of those Suburban Mom cuts. But at least it’s not square anymore, and it’s even, and it’s shiny, and it will grow, and I can make teeny-tiny ponytails still (I would have cried if I couldn’t make my ponies) and I can add some product in the morning before church and give it some oomph.

  1. You look beautiful! Definitely NOT like a suburban mom, PB, so don’t fret. Thank you for this very educational episode; I am always terrified that if I get a bad cut it will take eons to grow back and I will be miserable in the meantime. You have such a healthy attitude about the whole process…I may get a new haircut this week!
[That is what we’re all about here, cupcake!! Keeping a good attitude, making changes, rolling with it, etc. Send photos of your Before and After! – PB]

  2. Your new cut is lovely. Unless you regularly drive a minivan or other mom-car, I wouldn’t worry about being mistaken for a suburban mom. (Not that we’re evil or anything. Some of us even go to church. *grin*)

  3. Are you kidding?! That cut looks GREAT on you! Very flattering. I vote that you give it a week or two and see if you like it any better by then.

  4. Thanks, gang. I already like it in that I can wear it with a headband, I can tell it will grow out well, it looks neater than the mess I had, I can work with it. But you know how you see yourself a certain way (for me, that means “wild-ish” hair — when it was short, it was always sticking out with lots of layers) and then that’s gone? That’s what the sinking feeling was about. Also, and this is just visceral – I can’t believe the sense of loss I felt for the first few hours knowing that I didn’t have enough to pull it back. That feeling of being able to twist my hair back into a little chignon was wonderful!

  5. Super Cute! It’s sassy, it’s chic – what’s not to love?

By the way that dark blue color looks stunning on you! Really brings out the pink in your skin. As a fair-skinned lady myself, I love to wear blue 🙂

  6. It really looks great – very chic a la Katie Holmes, who I guess technically is a suburban mom 🙂

  7. Honestly I think your hair looks fine and I can see that others agree.

Last time I got a new cut I hated it because it wasn’t the way I imagined it should look. People told me it was cute and I didn’t believe it because I could not achieve the look I was going for. I ended getting a different style and cut because I didn’t believe them. I think I see myself now in your hair style angst and now think it probably wasn’t bad at all.

  8. Your hair looks great blown out, so I’ll just say that instead of getting all defensive and touchy about the suburban mom/minivan comments. [Oh, DON’T! I’m sorry! Do I need to actually say that some of my best friends are suburban moms with minivans!!? HONEY! – PB]

  9. I think this look is better than your wild-ish look. It looks professional, grown up and I think makes your face look thinner.
