What a great question from L, who writes,
Love your blog! I am buxom, short and ample. I feel very conspicuous wearing any necklaces that drop below my collar bone. A chain or pendant or beads feel like they are sitting on top of Mt. Everest. Can you comment on that? Am I being too self-conscious?
Dear L,
First and foremost, NEVER WEAR ANYTHING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL AWKWARD OR UNCOMFORTABLE. No matter what the fashion, it won’t be fashion for you if you’re feeling, as you say, “very conspicuous” while wearing it.
PeaceBang happens to be buxom, short and ample and loves wearing all kinds of long pendants and necklaces, but we are different women with different bodies even if we share the same approximate type. Only you know whether or not you’re being too self-conscious and may benefit from taking some chances.
As far as necklaces go, they do create a line on the body that doesn’t work as well, aesthetically-speaking, when they jut out and do not lie nicely on the neck or torso. So there’s no need to accessorize with necklaces if they’re not your thing. Maybe big earrings are your thing, or great red leather boots, or a fantastic vintage handbag adorned with a silk scarf on the handle, or great messy updo’s held together with laquered ornamental chop sticks, or a great pair of funky specs and bright red lipstick. Maybe big warm paisley shawls are your thing, wrapped around you and fastened with a beautiful leather belt. Maybe beautiful necklaces that drape just to your collarbone are your favorite thing and you have a special collection of them.
Go with what works. As for being overly self-conscious, you probably aren’t any more self-conscious than anyone out there. But if it seems like a problem, my dove, practice saying this to yourself:
“People do not look at me and see my flaws, they see me. And I have no idea what that is, because like everyone else in the world, I focus on my own flaws. But I am going to trust that when people see me, they see someone who radiates love and care for the world, because that’s what I’m putting out there, baby, and that’s beautiful.”

Thanks for the encouraging and uplifting words. I’ll keep looking to find my perfect, creative accessory!
I’ve found the most uplifting accessory is natural, short, polished nails in the hue of the moment. And a great, great haircut with the perfect shade of highlight/lowlight. Since I’ve been more religious (ha) about my hair and nails, I’ve accomplished feeling ‘put together’ with minimal accessories.
Thank you, dearest PeaceBang, for that wonderful last paragraph.
