What Fresh Hell Is This?

Just when you thought that Crocs World Domination was bad enough, they came up with these horrific things!

Honestly, they’re not horrific if you’re wearing them to waterboard or parasail or …whatever you outdoorsy types like to do while I’m reading on the beach, but I have visions of Casual Pastors wearing them to church on summer Sundays. I’m frightened, Auntie Em!!

  1. PB, I thought of you today when I was at Faneuil Hall in Boston and saw they have A CROCS STORE! No longer will Crocs devotees have to buy their beloved shoes in the supermarket! [Shel, Crocs have a WHOLE WALL at Nordstroms, too! That’s when I knew I had truly lost my crusade ; when they built their own temple in my cathedral. – PB]

  2. Well, I just bought a fresh pair of bright green Crocs, but I was truly appalled to see that they now have lined Crocs, like winter slippers, and they have named them Mammoth, after the wooly mammoth perhaps. Ugh. Truly ugly.

But I like my green Crocs (my pink knock-offs from Payless which I bought two years ago were wearing thin and it was time I got some real Croc brand Crocs — which are in fact better made a slightly more orthopedic) and no, I am not going to wear them in the pulpit or at the altar, I promise!

  3. I would contend that these are not even attractive if you are parasailing. Perhaps for a Halloween costume in which you are portraying a yeti.

  4. I totally saw someone wearing those over the summer, in fact now that I think about it it was a whole family wearing them (mother, father and small daughter) they are trully hidious, and what’s more, I can’t imagine they’d be comfy either, I mean I can’t even deal with wearing toe socks, but shoes that separate your toes!!? (not of course to be confused with toe shoes, an intirely different creature, that is pointe shoes for ballet, also not really apropriate for church…. but much less ugly that’s for sure)

  5. OMG–I was prepared to argue on behalf of whatever these were (love, love, love my Crocs!)–BUT once I actually saw them–totally terrifying!

  6. Some shoes should require a note from a healthcare provider:
    1. Crocs
    2. Anything with Velcro
    3. Anything by SAS

Until these, I was certain that hell does NOT exist. Now I am agnostic on the point. And yes, PB, to have THESE footcoverings stomping around Holy Ground (Nordies shoes)! Gets my prayers all up to date.

  7. It’s all about context.

I could not understand the point of Crocks until I found a wonderful shallow river by my house, with wide sweeping bends and salmon leaps and stony pools to play in. Now the Crocks live in the back of my car, awaiting the first glint of summer sun and warming water. (Though only once, after a long day of visiting, did I dare to tuck up my full length skirt, whisk away the white plastic collar and put on the crocks to go wading.) [Now that sounds just perfect! – PB]

  8. What oddities the toesie footwear! I will confess that the diatribes against Crocs on this BT4M blog had the unintended consequences effect. I hadn’t known they existed before. When I heard about them, I picked up a pair and now happily have them in my swim bag as shower shoes — the water drains out the holes. They are much bulkier than flip flops, but better for comfort. Let’s hope there are no unintended consequences from learning about these uglers.

  9. Oh my

These remind me of a Saturday Night Live skit a few years back in which one of the cast played folkie pop singer Jack Johnson, who had invented a line of shoes that looked like bare feet. It was a funny joke, and is a disturbing reality.

This Thanksgiving, my family was talking about various topics, including aging and living wills, in addition to shoes. At one point, my father looked me square in the eye and said, “As my eldest son, you need to know that you are responsible for ending my life quickly and painlessly if you ever see me wearing a pair of Crocs. That will be your sign that I have no mind left.”

    God bless Dad.

  10. They look like alien feet. Maybe they’re not shoes, but a way to identify people from another world…. (Like maybe NY or somewhere.)

  11. Oh, I have a male minister friend who wears these!! They are just as frightening in real life as they are in this pictures. They make me think of gorillas!! [NO! Emily! You must run an intervention! – PB]

  12. Uh oh..I can see someone wearing these as Joseph or a shepherd in a Christmas pageant- ugh!!! AND they cost $80, did you notice?

  13. It’s been five minutes, and I am STILL laughing. What WILL they think of next? Gloves that look like real hands? Did they have to make them so lizard-fleshy?

I bet they aren’t cheap, either!

  14. These shoes are actually for people that have bad knees and need to have a more natural feel for their body when they are walking or running.

Ugly, yes. But needed for some.

  15. Oh sad to say these are alive and well in Chicago, at least in Hyde Park. I was just passed on the street by a young man wearing these while walking the dog with my kids, thankfully they were distracted and did not start pointing and asking questions!
