PeaceBang has just acquired a new computer which came with some serious problems (like Vista software, to which PeaceBang took an immediate and personal loathing). Now that all the problems are fixed (we took Vista out and shot it), PeaceBang is happily tooling around learning and adjusting to her new brain. For the one day I was without either of my computers, I felt all floppy and helpless, somewhat like a cooked noodle feels before it has been dressed up with butter and cottage cheese (is that comfort food or WHAT?). I woke up at 2 and 3 AM to scribble in my journal after a prayer and a sermon came to me unbidden in my sleep and I had no machine to spill them into. What did pastors DO before word processors?
I am thinking of you all preparing for Sunday and aware that for many of you, this will be a Big Sunday Back in the pulpit after some weeks off. This is typically true for Unitarian Universalists — but before you get all jealous-like, non-UU boys and girls, keep in mind that Unitarian Universalists generally have no fixed liturgy and no lectionary to guide our preaching topics. We’re out there on our own week after week trying to come up with inspiring topics, writing almost all the elements of our liturgy ourselves (everything from Opening Words/Call To Celebration to the Offering and the prayers), and finding readings that suit our topics (no, we can’t just open the Bible; that’s not how we work — we have a wide and broad understanding of what constitutes Scripture). It’s no wonder that most of us come flying into September and limping out of June! Oh, it would be Lervly to, once in awhile, have nothing to write or compose or plan beside a ten-minute homily. *sigh*
I don’t know what I’m wearing on Sunday yet, but I did purchase a Flax jacket in ivory/cream that will be a transitional piece until it gets chilly. I’ve been throwing it on over everything, and with a pair of big gold hoops and sandals, it has saved me from sartorial indecision many times over the past weeks. As you know by now, I’m not a big fan of the Wrinkled Hempen Goddess look, but this jacket is cut well and has some structure to it, and looks swell with skirts and trousers.
P.S. I hate her shoes. No amount of toe-pointing can make that a cute shoe.
P.P.S. Does anyone know what to do if you consistently type faster than your computer can keep up with?
I know several women who wear shoes like that for the comfort (and think they’re cute), but I just think they have no pizazz.
You must type pretty fast! Your computer should be able to hold onto the letters as you type them, it will just take a second for them to appear.
As one who has (in the past) torn her ankle tendon by falling off platform shoes, I do usually vote for comfort (and lower heels!) in shoes. sigh…
But – I love the jacket! Where did you find it?
You should be able to go into the Control Panel and click on Keyboard and change the speed of repeat. Of course, I have Vista, and I can’t remember XP/2000 but it should be the same.
As for shoes, I wore “real” shoes for the first time in months yesterday and have terrible blisters. Treat your feet carefully if you’ve been wearing flips, slip-ons, or sneakers all summer.

Just in case you’re not aware, the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer has a lectionary in the back, and might be a good resource to “fall back on” if you’re having a dry week. The readings tend to weave together to form a theme.
I’m sorry, but I like the shoes. In fact, I was going to ask you if you’ve tried Skechers, which are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. I don’t do well in fashionable shoes; I’m sorry, I’ve tried over and over, but with all the standing I must do at church, my feet hurt and hurt. My little black suede Skechers will be the perfect winter shoes, and the price is great!
I’m okay with the shoes. But Vista? Vista needs killin’, for sure.
I’ve just had to get orthotics because of plantars fibromatosis (worse than fasciatis) which sort of shoots my Sunday shoes, 15 year-old flat Etienne Agiers. Besides, I can’t even find decent flat shoes. Help! I am almost at the point of buying a pair of men’s fancy slip on shoes that have the tooled leather and tassles.
@ Earthbound: I found it in my mom’s closet! I said to her, all casual-like, “Oh Mom. I really like this jacket. In fact, I LOVE IT!” Usually this is her cue to say, “I never wear that- just take it.” But she goes, “No dice, kid, I use that one a lot.” And I go, “Well, it would just be so GREAT for my late summer office wardrobe, can I just BORROW it?” and she says, “Nope, sorry” and I go, “Okay, then I’m just gonna steal it, okay?” And she says, “Vicki, I mean it. I use that a lot. You really can’t have it.” So I go, “Okay, shoot.” So then I went online and did a google search of Flax jackets and found some little boutique in Florida or something and ordered it. If you really want to know, I can look up the style, but I can’t remember it offhand.
