Brown Shoes: Tough Decisions

August 28, 2007 on 12:23 am | In Shoes (Gals) |

My criteria:
I have dressy brown pumps. I needed something more casual but still wearable with skirts for church. They have to be comfortable enough to run around in.
I think I love the little clog-like ones with the buckle best (by Indigo Clarks). I wanted something that would look good with a patterned sock and have a slight funk factor.

The first ones are beautiful (Belladonna by Indigo) but I’m sure they’re not nearly as comfortable as the cloggish ones. I don’t think I’d use the booties very often, and I’m not loving the suede Mary Janes.

What do you think?

  1. Those second pair would be great for Portland. Boy. I might have to get those. They would go great with wool tights and a brown corduroy skirt.

Speaking of which … PB: WHAT is the secret to wearing corduroy skirts with tights - when there is no liner in the skirt? Do you just take the skirt to the seamstress/tailor and have them install a liner?

  2. Well, I have to say, that second pair looks like it (they) were literally taken off Priscilla Alden’s feet, right around that whole Miles Standish situation :).
Number two is too Pilgrim for my taste, PB…any of the others look fine to me.

  3. Hmm, hard choice. The first pair is definitely dressier and I could see them better for Sunday morning. But the second pair are too cute and look so much more comfy (I’m not really into much heel). I’d probably go with the second pair.

  4. I think the suede Mary Janes are very, very pretty… but might not be great for running around. I vote #2.

  5. hafidha sofia - I would personally just wear a slip.

  6. Suede it too high maintainence for frequent wear. One or two are very similar to me, but the first one seems a little dressier.

One hint: scrape on the heel to see if it wears off. I had bad luck with a pair of cloggy mary janes that scuffed to light brown and looked terrible almost immediately.

  7. Definitely the clogs…I want them myself now!

  8. where are they from??? I seriously want them.

  9. I like the second ones best, but, as Tom commented, the Pilgrim factor is high. Perhaps for the interfaith Thanksgiving service??

  10. Whence comest these shoes?

  11. LOL! You are all cracking me up. I found them on Zappos and shoes.com. And of course, living right near Plymouth and serving a 17th century congregation I am a little partial to pilgrimish things. I thought the buckle ones would look great with jeans and tweedy blazers or with dresses and cardigans.

  12. Canadian,
I’ve tried the slip but the problem I’ve had is that the slip will ride up - until the hem is literally gathered all around my waist.

Maybe my butt is too round. I don’t know if anyone else has this problem.

  13. Hafidha — I have the same issue with a couple of my skirts. The slip just causes more problems than going without it, but the skirt sticks to the tights and rides up when I walk and I’m constantly pulling it down. So I can look fabulous if I stand still, but can’t walk anywhere!

I’m thinking of putting in liners on two skirts, and anchoring them to the hem so that they stay put. But I have a ton of other projects to do first, so I probably won’t end up wearing them at all this fall. Sigh. And I finally have killer boots to wear with them.

  14. Re: the unlined corduroy skirt. For these, I buy “slick” tights - made of microfiber instead of wool. They’re not *as* warm, though certainly warmer than hose! I recommend both Hanes and Hue.

Don’t forget, too, that there are divided slips: bifurcated like pants. These might help - and add to the warmth-in-winter factor!

  15. @ Hafidha and all: Ancient PeaceBang secret: put on your tights and wear lycra body slimmer bike shorts OVER them. TA DA! No sticking, no rubbing, no slip needed.

  16. Ladies - thanks for the tips! I’ll try the bifurcated slips first. It doesn’t get as cold here as it does in Boston, so bike shorts over tights might cause me to overheat. Now I’m really looking forward to those cool fall days!

  17. PB,
I don’t know if the clogs are more comfy than the first pair, but I’m tellin’ ya, those clogs scream little Dutch boy–and not in a good way. Just sayin’.

  18. I love all the shoes… I must go shoe-shopping soon…

Actually, I hate the booties. I especially hate the booties with skirts looks. We tried those in the 80s. It sucked when we were 14. It’ll suck again. The therapy was so hard the first time around. No booties with skirts…

As for the slip thing- I tried to buy a slip recently (skirt emergency, long story) and the sales lady told me they did not carry them anymore. Where do you find them these days?

  19. Clarks has one called “Divine,” and it looks really good, but so far I haven’t seen a plain b-flat brown, just “rust” and “cashmere” (tan). More platform than clog-ish.

  20. I’m sorry: I can barely wear a heel. I’d like to convince myself that Episcopalians have to stand more than you do- but I think that’s probably not true. I just have bad feet. But Skechers or their newest imitation, Mudd, are good for my feet. They’re flat and mary janes. Too unsophisticated for some, but comfy and acceptable (and the Mudds are brown) for me. I’ve tried better shoes, but still haven’t found any acceptable with any sort of tapered toe or heel that thrusts my toes into hell.

  21. I’m worried about not about the buckle on the clogs but the stubby rounded toe. If you can pull that off, blessings to you! Not a lot of people can.

  22. Spanx/bike shorts OVER hose?!? How long does it take to pull yourself back together after a visit to the ladies room?

Must be some pretty awesome corduroy skirt to justify that particular circle of H E double hockey sticks.

  23. Round toed shoes are not Olive Oyl; they are Minnie Mouse.

    Comment by Judy — August 29, 2007 #

  24. Stubby rounded toe - so nice to wear when one has stubby rounded toes! (But I think Michael mean pulling off the LOOK, not the wearing of.)
