The Brown Shoe Controversy
August 29, 2007 on 10:30 am | In Miscellany |I am on my way out the door to make a pastoral visit but I just had to stop and say that I LOVE YOU PEOPLE.
I love that you care so passionately about the relative cuteness/hideousness of the shoes I was considering and that we can have fun like this.
You crack me up. Seriously.
By the way, I did a shoe audit last night and found a pair of 3″ brown wedges I forgot I had purchased at Payless last year. I think they’ll work for a lot of my outfits. NOW I’m thinking that I might be able to skip the purchase of a brown shoe and focus on finding some suitable flat or low-heeled BLACK shoes that aren’t Olive Oylish like the ones I currently wear (and have almost worn out). They are Keenes and have the dumbest, roundest toe of all time. I hear clown music whenever I put them on.
I MIGHT get the Little Dutch Girl/Pilgrim shoes in black, which has a silver buckle. But I might start hearing clown music when I put THOSE on, too.
Ah, dilemmas! And while I’m on the subject, why can’t I find a pair of good snow boots that don’t make me look like the love child of Dusty Springfield and Chewbacca?
And I agree with whoever said that the ankle-boots-with-skirt thing looked hideous in the 80’s, and it will probably look hideous now. Only extremely leggy young fillies who are careful to coordinate rich-colored hose with their boots and skirts should try it. I’ve seen it in the fashion mags and it CAN be done, but not by the likes of meatball-shaped moi, I’ll tell ya.
Ta-ta, darlings! You’re a riot! And did I tell you that some of the latest shoe fashions are called “Shooties?” Apparently a hybrid of shoes and booties.
Silliness!! Ees good for the heart.
xoxo PB

Shooties!? That sounds like something that comes out of the rear end of koala bears. Hopefully that word will go the way of the “fork.”

Just had to comment…
I did not need brown shoes, nor did I in any way need shoes, in the way that one needs a bathroom, say, or to eat lunch. But I have been pining for some dressy Mary Janes, and your posting brought them into the category of “need”. I wish I could link photos to this dern thing, but if you’re curious, I have purchased an adorable black pair from “Softspots”, style “Mandy”. I am unfamiliar with this company, other than their “classics” section looked hideously familiar. Someone there got smart and found out what women really want to buy in a comfort shoe. They’re at: softspots.com. Zappos also had them, but none left in black in my size. And yes, it is truly amazing how folks (including moi) responded to this post.

The rear end of koala bears!!! LOVE it. Thank you for that laugh!!
PB, attractive snowboots would be a great topic, especially ones that are reasonable for commuters. I’ve been wearing “overshoes” but they are also pretty ugly. Thanks!

ankle-boots are IN in Finland - but because of the weather they go with trousers so that’s ok :)- I think …

I have ordered these flats from Dr. Marten. I coveted them every time I stood in front of the Doc Marten store in Portland during General Assembly. I’ll let you know what I think when they arrive (maybe today!).

I ordered them in black.

I found some warm and serviceable snowboots that are cute in that chunky way but not overly furry–they come in black, brown, and tan, and I can wear them both under pants for warmth and over pants or with tights and skirts in the snow once they’re waterproofed.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/18100125.html They’re made by report, and I think the style is “Norfolk,” but Report makes a lot of cute boots. Good luck!

I have a pair of dressy mary janes with about a two inch heel that I bought a couple of years ago and I think they are the PERFECT liturgical shoe. They are comfortable, graceful, not at all frumpy, and with that little extra something that says they weren’t issued with the alb and stole. Thank you zappos.

I love my Lands End snowboots - they’re simple, black, quilted tops and relatively slim for a waterproof boot. Don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, but I got mine last winter, so I’m sure they have something like it yet. Oh yes, they’re also VERY reasonably priced for a snowboot - something like $40.
