  1. Herewith I confess: I sometimes do not follow all of Peacebang’s admonitions, even those for which she has crusaded. However, I must also say that I am much more aware that I’m MAKING A CHOICE that will have consequences, whatever direction I take. As a Zumba faithful, I wear some pretty bod-hugging er, pants. It feels fine to do so in class, where we are wearing them to exercise, and the “culture” expects it. I’m not there as a professional, and although a congregant teaches the class, we quickly made a rule: “What happens in Zumba stays in Zumba”. Including what the minister wore and how cute her behind was.

  2. I hope I didn’t imply you were shaming – I was trying to say the letter writer was. She made some sort of equation with fat = sloth; fat = bad judgment.

  3. @Rev Gidget, I think that’s fine – it’s about boundaries. I go to the gym in my parish; other clergy I know go running through their parishes; some clergy (not me, although I should!) spend time doing their garden at the parish house! All of those are activities where a particular kind of clothing is required. You couldn’t do Zumba in a pencil skirt, nor would it be appropriate; I couldn’t go to the gym in a clerical shirt, nor would that be appropriate. I do know someone who gardens in a cassock on the grounds that clergy need to be dressed like clergy all the time – and I think that’s actually far more damaging in terms of representing the religious worldview. I don’t want people to think that religious people/ clergy are so out of touch they don’t know that you need to wear gym clothing at the gym!
