I hate to tell you, girly girls, but little, pretty accessories are OUT. One of the easiest and least expensive ways to update your look is to get a few statement pieces and rock them. Find stylish types on Instagram and follow them for ideas. Get outside your comfort zone. Think less “I’m wearing this petite locket because it’s so dear to me” and more “I have an event today : how can I project that I am a person of NOW to a community that needs a powerful religious witness NOW for TODAY’s issues.”
Save the lovely little bracelets and invisible earrings for days at the office. For anything more public, you need something bolder. Start looking for ideas and trying new things. If you’re not on Instagram or Pinterest, please do join and open your visual world. For those of us who live in our heads and in the Spirit, this is an important way to balance the verbal, metaphysical and emotional realm with beauty, art and non-verbal communication.

It really is an art and a science, this accessorizing thing.
I admit that I am less likely to err on the side of dainty than on the side of “take at least three of those off so you don’t look like the clearance rack at TJ MAXX.”
That petite locket can work, if you layer it with something else– my favorite trick to incorporate dainty pieces that I love, or have sentimental value. Add them with chunky chains, beads or pearls. Earrings, though, need to be big in order to give presence.
So what about “real” jewelry with gemstones or natural pearls. On most of our budgets our diamonds and other gems and genuine pearls aren’t going to be that big. What are the rules for wearing precious jewelry which can be small. And the irony that I might wear a larger rhinestone piece by day but not my good largest diamond earrings.
We have to be careful about earrings, though. I remember an intern at my home church (now a beloved colleague, as she was the first person to say my name and “minister” in the same sentence) who was tall and slender, with short hair. She loved big, dangly earrings, and they were SUPER distracting when she preached, because she also moved her head a lot — she was an animated preacher. We on her internship committee lovingly told her to lose the big earrings when she was preaching (“Dangly” was the operative word, though — it wasn’t about size). At the end of her internship year, there was a “ladies luncheon” for her; we all wore hats, and we all gave her pairs of suitable earrings for her ministry career. She’s still going strong! [That’s great! Yes, dangly earrings are very distracting in the pulpit. I do wear drop earrings, but they don’t move. You can go big without going distracting. It’s all a question of design and proportion. – PB]
