Taking Your Calls

I can’t think of any clothing or accessories posts to do, kittens. What do you want to talk about? What’s on your minds?

  1. ooh ooh i’m first! =)
I’d love to hear some wisdom or experience about dressing for children’s ministry. This week for example the various demands on me were so many and so contradictory it was hard to decide what to wear. Our church had a youth-run BBQ and all-church fair after the service, so I was helping set up the BBQ and face painting stations, teaching Sunday school all down on the floor with my guitar, and then participating in worship (and a communion sunday at that) and going straight from worship to the fair. I could’ve used a backstage quick-change with a costuming assistant.
I settled on dressy pants with POCKETS and a cotton floral button-down shirt that washes up great from messes, to work for all of the above activities. So I was overdressed for arts and crafts, and underdressed at the communion table, ah well. Someone else must have done this too or maybe there’s even a halo of praise for someone who’s awesome at it. I’d love to hear more!

  2. I’m on a quest for professional shoes with a bit of a heel that can be worn without hosiery. I’d like to keep my toes and heels covered but would also like some summery ventilation for comfort. Am I dreaming the impossible dream?

  3. I’d like to second Talitha’s request. On my average week, I go from worship-no-alb to worship-robed to youth group, while hauling my twin toddlers with me. (I start in a collar and wedges and usually change in between, as for the car wash the other week.) Upcoming, I’m running Bible School one week and an in-town mission trip one week, while being the solo pastor on call for the rest of the church’s needs. A few summers ago, the youth requested that I stop wearing my very practical khaki capri pants, now making me self-conscious about everything. I’ve seen other pastors-who-work-with-youth add dignity with accessories, but since I’m at the stage where necklaces and dangly earrings are impractical with my own children, I gave up on those for the most part. (Not to mention the Sunday considerations of a microphone around the ear.) Yes, help would be great.

  4. Nice SUMMER office wear for big women who are prone to sweating. There isn’t an air conditioner in the world that can completely combat Chicago summer humidity!

  5. Thinking about hair length and hair style. Started my career with a bob which has finally grown out. Feel like my professional look is shoulder length, worn down and curled under with a round brush, but now that it has surpassed that length, I’d love to know a few ways to make long hair look neat and professional, especially in an interview setting. I have been talked into getting layered haircuts thinking that they will look more professional, but all they’ve ever looked is messy.

  6. My issue isn’t about clothing, etc, but about bags and dark circles under my eyes. I noticed in your May 21 post “sans makeup/with make up” that your under eye concealer does a good job!
What brand do you use? Do you apply it before or after foundation? I’ve yet to find a concealer that makes things look better.

  7. 1. how to layer different face products, without ending with a greasy mess. Do you wear sunscreen plus foundation, or just use makeup that already has sunscreen in it? Where does serum fit in to the equation?

    2. summer office clothes for someone with pasty white skin

    3. how heavier women can look pulled together in shorts (or is that a no-no??)

    THANKS….love your blog!!

  8. How to mentor other women on their professional look and carriage. Without being a jerkface.

  9. I’ve let my hair go its natural gray this past year and while I like it very much, I have not yet found my way to makeup that works with it. My face looks washed out.

  10. Not clergy, but an avid reader who appreciates your perspectives on things. Makeup is a “special occasion” thing for me – the last time I wore it was at a wedding three years ago. But I find myself on the job hunt and am wondering if I absolutely need to wear makeup for interviews. Can I use a tinted moisturizer (or one of those BB creams, maybe) to make my skin less blotchy but skip all other makeup (eye shadow, lip color, etc.)? I don’t intend to wear makeup on a daily basis, so the thought of spending $ on products I will rarely have occasion to use is unappealing.

  11. Quality sunblock that doesn’t look shiny on the face. I thought I had it with Aveeno Active Naturals, and saw a photo of myself doing public witness. My skin was nicely protected, but – quelle horreur!

  12. Another vote for Talitha’s comment. (I’m both a lay preacher and children’s work leader. Mostly I manage not to have to wear both hats simultaniously, but just occasionally things stack up.)

  13. What Deb said. How to mentor younger ministers in what to wear (more specifically, what NOT to wear) without being a jerkface. I know the rules, but tend to come off all preachy when explaining them to someone else.

Also… undergarments. As in, maybe giving up on whittling down the size, and resorting to undergarments to create a false impression.

  14. For Laura on the shoe hunt: Try Rieker shoes, specifically this style: http://www.zappos.com/rieker-43706-mirjam-06-whitekiesel
I have gone through two pairs of them. They are great!

On sunscreen for Rev. Gidget: This is amazing stuff: goes on smooth, very slightly tinted, covers beautifully with good protection. Pricey but a little goes a long way. http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Protection-Formula-Mineral-Block/dp/B00510I42K/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1402033869&sr=1-1&keywords=solar+protection+formula

It’s available through other suppliers if you don’t want to use Amazon.

  15. It would be great if you could give some suggestions and guidelines for those of us who are young + young-looking + slender/boyish in frame.

As someone on the path to ordination, I wonder about how to balance the needs created by each of these elements as a clergy woman (wanting to wear things that are relatively modern/funky, but that make me look older/respectable, while still flattering and not overwhelming my slender build).

Any help would be appreciated! Your writing and advice is great.
