Decent Pulpit Shoes And How To Find Them

Okay, these aren’t going to give anyone palpitations of thrils, but they’re solid Sunday morning preaching shoes.

They look wicked frumpy in black and brown, but in this color, I thought they would serve honorably.

Now, here is the highly mysterious process by which I found them, since I get that question all the time.

1. I looked in my closet and realized that I only have old (like 12 years old!) black high heels and flats, and a couple pair of wedges that are okay but not great.

2. I decided that I needed a low-heel preaching shoe that I could wear with navy and grey.

3. I went to Zappos.com and entered the heel height, color options (pewter, grey, purple) and style (pumps, wedges) that I was interested in. I scrolled through the 469 options that the search engine provided for me.

4. I found nothing I liked, so I went to Google search and entered keywords “low heel pump, purple, leather” and found another bunch of options. These shoes came up in Image Search. I clicked on the Google Shopping option and found out where they were for sale.

5. I chose the least expensive option (Google does the work for you that way), which required one click of my thumb to take me to eBay, where a vendor was selling a new pair in my size for $35.

6. I bought them through PayPal and then I went to bed.

You too can find semi-frumpy good preaching shoes by just this very method! Good luck!

  1. Neat, sounds like a method that even I, Rev. Sasquatch (Bigfoot!) can use! Currently wearing a pair of Aravon Maya in black–they may not be the most stylish, but they are truly the most comfortable dress shoes I’ve worn in my adult life. Looking to get another pair or two when I can manage to not cringe at the price. [I just did a quicky search and found a pair in size 11 for $87.00. Good luck! -PB]

  2. Ugh. These shoes should only be considered if you intend to give up your sense of style and good taste for Lent…and for me I’d rather take on the glory of God for Lent. Sorry, not ever wearing these. Pity one can’t upload pictures here so we could all share our Lenten footwear.

    Surrendering to the frump is akin to surrendering to the patriarchy. Stop, don’t go there, not ever.
    [But I LOOKED AND LOOKED. And I am wearing fabulous acid green and purple Fluevogs for the reception. I’ll tell you what. If they come in the mail and are too tragic to be borne, I will send them back. I’ll post a photo and you all can vote. – PB]

  3. I’ve been looking at Hotter shoes..originally from the UK, but now available here in the US. Lower heels, but with classic style.. reminds me of Downton Abbey. I think the “Valetta”, “Vanessa”, “Clarissa”, or “France” (all in black)would work with a black Genevan preaching robe. However, my favorite is “France” in dark aqua… but not for liturgical purposes!

  4. Purple for Lent! Love to have them! To me they look perfect, enough heel, but not teetering. Beautiful colour.

  5. I imagine that ‘low heels’ are in the eye of the beholder, or the one who wears them, but I’d be crying in pain after even only an hour in these, let alone a morning’s worth of ministry. Maybe you’ve addressed this already…but what are some choices for stylish flat shoes?
