Oooooh, yes. PeaceBang is DEFINITELY hearing about the various fashion and image conversations going on regarding the womens’ gymnastics teams. Gabby didn’t do her hair. Aliya Mustafina of Russia is rocking the smoky eye.
The opening ceremony outfits by Ralph Lauren were atrocious (I agree).
While PB doesn’t feel inclined to do a break-down of all of this, she would like to simply say, “What is Auntie PeaceBang always telling you? Image is important, everything you wear communicates something, and … YAY FOR OUR WONDERFUL OLYMPIANS! YOU ARE AMAZING!”
I enjoyed this article chronicling the evolution of image in women’s gymnastics over the years since Nadia Comaneci awed us all with her perfect 10.
They put a lot of sparkles in their hair too! Go for it girls.
I was also surprised by all the makeup on the women running the 100m. I guess if you’re not running for that long, you don’t have to worry about getting sweaty. They were all gorgeous.
I wonder how much this has increased since the advent of HDTV, now that we have TV sharp enough to count pimples?
Yes, but have you seen the nails! Lots of patriotic nail art going on on fingers that are clasping their medals. 🙂
I didn’t think that Aylia rocked the smokey eyes—more like she had her sad Eeyore eyes on. Maybe if she had smiled now and again, and those sad eyes had sparkled, I’d have noticed the smoke instead of the sad. All that said, maybe it’s hard to sparkle and smile when you’ve got Gabby and Company showing you the way.
As far as Gabby Douglas’ hair, I was under the impression that the gymnasts’ hair styles are proscribed- as in, written in the rule books, that the hair must be pulled back from the face in a pony tail. She didn’t have any other option. And since she is African-American, that won’t be a bouncy ponytail like a European girl would have. It’ll be what she wore- which went with the rules.
I didn’t think that *any* of the young women gymnasts had attractive hair — what’s with the sloppy spiky half-buns? — but maybe that’s me being cranky! Yes, they are amazing so who cares about their hair.
