Who likes hairspray? Not me! I associate it with John Water’s movies, clouds of toxic Aqua Net fumes backstage at New Canaan Summer Theatre productions, and stiff, crispy dry hair.
However, a girl needs a hairspray in her medicine cabinet for Sunday morning hold and that sort of thing, so I do have the odd can around. I’ve tried Aveda products (either too smelly, too drying or too greasy) and Lord knows how many other formulae. It’s nice to know that although science hasn’t managed to cure cancer or the common cold, it has managed to put together some hair sprays that do a great job, so let that be some consolation to the weary world.
I highly recommend Clairol Herbal Essence Body Envy Volumizing Hair Spray. It smells good and actually really does volumize, and it makes such an enormous difference to my now shoulder-length hair that – *gasp*- I will probably start to use it any time I want to wear my hair down (not often). It instantly transforms my hair from limp to va-va-voom, so of course I love the stuff. And at $4 a bottle I can afford to destroy the ozone on a more regular basis.
My other pick is L’Oreal Elnett Satin Extra Hold, which has fantastic staying power if you’re doing any sort of up-do, but which brushes out easily and doesn’t leave you with Crispy Head. I have to say that I love the old-school packaging, too.
Someone gave me a bottle when she cut her hair short, but I think it retails for something like $12.
NOW. I don’t want to name names, but some of you sent me a video clip of one of your leaders looking NOT GREAT on national television. There is no way I’m going to air the clip here, but I will say that I agree with you that a sort of female version of the Donald Trump combover is not a good leadership look. In fact, the hair was so weird, it was actually distracting and therefore took away from the power of the ideas being expressed so eloquently by the speaker. If you know of whom I speak, and you are one of the concerned Pigeons who wrote to me about it, why not just copy this column and send it to the person in question? She’s an important religious leader and she could really benefit from an image consult. I said it, now you can deliver the message if you so choose.

Hope it is not +Katharine Jefferts Schori – though I do wish she would wear some other clothing than her pants suit all the time.
Right church, wrong pew.
Love Elnett! I think it’s more like $8 a can in flyover country, though. 😉
I’d like to find a good hair-care product that’s unscented. One of my good buddies in choir can’t bear to be around any kind of fragrance whatsoever. So it’s side-combs with the choir robe.
