Here is a totally cute young girl looking perfectly fine in leggings and a dress [as always, click on images to enlarge]:
Here is another young girl looking beyond adorable in a fantastic, stylish, snappy outfit with leggings. This is AGE-APPROPRIATE for a young woman. It is not appropriate for a minister to wear a tunic like that without actual pants or a skirt. Period. No whining.

Here is a totally hip person wearing a sexy outfit with leggings and a leather jacket and boots. This is not formal enough for our profession. It’s too much leg. Period.
Here are three tall, fairly flat-chested fashion models wearing leggings (well, or not) and short dresses. They are fashion models so they look fine. You, however, are not a fashion model and should not be showing THIGHS IN ANYTHING, okay? We should not be seeing your THIGHS, Reverend Ms. Thang. You can bitch and moan to me about your Bermuda shorts and your climate and your sporty ministry setting or whatever excuse you have for showing your hocks and I’m going to cross my arms over my chest and stare you down with The Pursed Lips And Cocked Eyebrow of Extreme Disapproval because I am TIRED OF HEARING IT.

I am NOT FINISHED RANTING ABOUT THIGHS.
I don’t want to see your bare (or pantyhosed) upper thighs when you sit and cross your legs. I don’t care if you are a man or a woman or transgendered. No visible upper thighs, for God’s sake.
I don’t want to see your thigh flesh when you bend over. Just no.
I don’t want to see your upper thighs in leggings because you forgot to factor in the angle when you’re standing in front of me on a chancel and I’m down in the pews. I can see up your dress and it doesn’t matter whether or not you think leggings are modest. They afford the SAME LEVEL OF MODESTY AS PANTYHOSE. Please post that over your full-length mirror.
PEACEBANG SEZ: LEGGINGS ARE JUST THICKER PANTYHOSE. If the dress is too short to wear with pantyhose to work, it’s too short to wear with leggings!
Furthermore, and please post this above your full-length mirror as well:
JUST BECAUSE THIS DRESS LOOKS FINE WHILE I’M STANDING STILL DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS APPROPRIATE FOR MY WORKDAY.
And a special note to busty gals: That form-fitting sweater dress that looks so great on you when you’re standing in front of the full length mirror hikes up in the front. So when you’re standing in front of me, and I’m sitting, I can see up your skirt. Even when you’re wearing leggings, it’s not an appropriate view.
Don’t make me get out my Indiana Jones bullwhip on this one, chickens.

Was the transgender(ed) comment really necessary? Trans* people are not some separate mythical gender. Some of us are binary identified (for instance my gender is male, not transgender). And while some people do see themselves as outside of the binary, I still think this was an inappropriate use of the term in an attempt to be funny.

I just found that remark off putting and hurtful. [YES, it was necessary because the same time I was writing this post, I was in conversation with trans people and that’s why I thought to include it. The perma-victim thing is really off-putting, Shay. Damned if you don’t acknowledge the trans community, damned if you do, because you won’t use the perfect concept or enlightened enough language or recognize your binary oppression, etc etc. … or, you must be making fun (!). Who the heck can keep up? I’m a vocal ally of the trans community and I can tell you right now, with the constant disagreement yet insistence on ideological purity within the community (some people are offended by the very thing that you insist is preferable), I wonder why I bother. Congratulations on your powers of mind-reading. I believe we call that projection, and you should know better. In the future I’ll stick to gender binaries rather than be subject to your imagined oppression. – PB]
What about dresses that hit below the knee? I bought a knit dress at J. Jill and it hits below the knee. Leggings are warmer than tights or hose so I wear them. Have another that is more summery and hits at the knee and I still prefer the leggings to bare legs or hose as they are more modest. Is your leggings issue about showing thighs or is there something inherently evil about leggings even when thighs are covered? [It’s all about thighs. I think leggings are cute with a dress that hits just at the knee or a tiny bit below. Any longer a skirt than that and they can be too heavy. – PB]
well, I agree with Joy- I wear leggings for the same reasons mostly, they are warmer than tights or pantyhose but also they are much sturdier- you can get a year out of three or four pairs whereas pantyhose can snag the first time.
My skirts are the length PB mentions along with some shorter ones, but I don’t think they are too heavy with longer skirts which I see on other people
you are lucky not to be in my demographic – what do you think leggings look like on the over 70 set? [Well, just not elegant enough, dammit! – PB]
Love, love, love this! I want to print it out and tape it to the mirrors in every bathroom at my seminary. [DO IT! – PB]
PB, you make me laugh out loud at my desk! “I’m going to cross my arms over my chest and stare you down with The Pursed Lips And Cocked Eyebrow of Extreme Disapproval.” Hee! I am going to perfect this stance because OY! — some of the interns around here!
What about going the other direction from showing thighs…
Would you hate me forever if I wore these swimming with the youth group? http://www.modestkini.com/en/products/men-s-swimshorts/243/9530
And what about jeggings and skinny jeans? It’s a slippery slope.
Hmm.. This, combined with the section about men in modestkini post puts my kilts in a strange place.
