I know, right?
But it was all over the runways for the Spring 2011 shows and although I think yellow eyeshadow is always going to look HORRID on a white woman of any shade who isn’t a professional make-up artist, I saw a photo of a black woman wearing yellow shadow in GLAMOUR and it was SO. PRETTY.
I can’t find the image from Glamour (which was SO. PRETTY!) but here are some ideas. I don’t super-love any of these make-up jobs but I think my point is to think outside the box a bit. You can wear these colors to a party, to a special church event, just to jazz up your life a bit. Again, I think women of color can really rock a bold eyeshadow way better than white women tend to — just make sure that if you’re doing a bold eyeshadow, anyone, don’t go with a bold lip. That’s just too clowny and too much.
(This is what I mean by balancing a dramatic eye — way too dramatic for any of us mere mortals!!! — with a neutral lip)
(Interesting. Not sure I like it – but I actually love the lip color! She’s too olive to wear a yellow eyeshadow but that’s a really pretty, sheer shade)

I guess it’s true we learn something new every day. Why did it never occur to me to pair a bold eye shadow with a neutral lip color? Because I’m fashionally challenged, that’s why.

I don’t think yellow looks good on my pale face, but a nice copper or gold shadow can be very pretty. ULTA has some good house brand eye shadows that aren’t too expensive and are fun to experiment with.
Thank God I’m too old to even think about doing this!

Wow. After the bugbear week I (and I suspect you and most people who are not lounging on a beach vacation) have had, it’s kind of fun and silly to contemplate yellow eyeshadow.
Delurking to say I honestly laughed out loud at this: I had forgotten that I had two shades of yellow eyeshadow when I was 15 and wore makeup. This would have been 1972/3.

I’ve been intrigued by the bold makeup trend. I bought some purple eyeshadow, and I thought it looked nice and smoky, but at the end of the day, it was sadly faded. Maybe I’ll use a primer next time.
