A Funny Thing Happened (To My Hair) On the Way To the Forum

I loved visiting all the ancient sites in Athens on my sabbatical and was totally inspired by the sculptures of the women. This is a hair idea I got from the Roman world — just that wrapped up hair thing that’s easy to suggest with a band like this. You can make it even more dramatic by separating the bands, as you see in the later photos:

You don’t have to get all your inspiration from beauty mags. In fact, I rarely do. Get it from the world.

This is a hair-do in progress. I want to wear it to a party next week so I’m trying it out today.

  1. Wow—this looks fantastic on you! What a great idea. Thanks! (I also appreciate the tip to practice a new do well before you want to wear it for a special occasion.)

I used to work in an art museum. I don’t think anyone ever thought of marketing the art collections as a better-than-a-beauty-magazine source of inspiration, but you’re right that they are.

  2. I love this look. It would look amazing on me! Here is my problem and I would love some advice from PB or others.

These things do not hold in my hair. I have lots of red wavy hair, but it is very fine. The only things that stay put are those snappy hair clips and hair elastics, and even then if it is a straight ponytail I have to tighten it or redo it at least once an hour.

My hair slips out of plastic hairbands which don’t fit my square head anyway. I’ve tried the Goody “No Slip” bands and they slide out as fast as I put them in.

Has anyone found bands like this that can stick without glue??

  3. Hair bands like this dig in behind my ears and give me a headache – pity as I do like the look. [It doesn’t dig – it’s an elastic! – PB]

  4. I took a closer look at the stature picture. Are you sure it is a woman? And what is that in her/his hand?????
I didn’t totally miss the point. The hair style is very elegant. [You’re a quick study, kid. I put up the wrong photo and then didn’t have time to fix it. – PB]

  5. Love that look and am so grateful for the stretchy headbands. Problem is I have straight hair so this wouldn’t look as fetching.

  6. GIRLS – you can add volume and texture to your hair by blow-drying it with volumizer or texturizng spray. Mine is very flat and fine so that’s what I have to do. Don’t settle for the hair you have when there are so many effective products out there! This would look great with straight hair – you just need to pump it up a bit and clip it into a high, messy bun with a medium or large claw clip. – PB

  7. I’d love to wear this look. But whever I sweep back my fringe, (you call them bangs, is that right?) I look like a walking advert in need of Botox treatment!
