“Fichu” for Preaching Robe

So remember waaaay back when when we were talking about covering the neck in the Geneva Gown?

I finally found a piece of lace that will do the trick. It’s really long (50″) and wide (6″) so I hope it won’t look like a big mess on my short neck, but it was $12 and seemed like a beautiful thing to have even if doesn’t work with the robe.

I bought it from an online antique dealer called Ruby Lane.

  1. Dear Peacebang! This is one of the very rare occasions where I can`t agree with your fashion advices.
First of all I think a robe should have a well cut collar which doesn`t show too much “undies” means shirts and blouses.

A white covering seems to be too distracting- the black-white contrast is a very strong one. Do we really want to emphasise the fact that our robe doesn´t cover our street clothes?
And surely not with a sort of victorian-style piece of lace. Looks like a 19th century nanny to me.

If you want to cover your neckline- why don`t you go for a simple black bit of fabric?
But the best thing is to get the collar of your robe altered- if possible.

(By the way I do strongly recommend to have a robe custom tailored. For exactly that reason. I know- its costly but to me it somehow pays out. My robe was a gift by my mum 😉 )

  2. I’ve got to say I’m not crazy about this either. I’ve consistently not liked lace on women’s vestments. Plus, i would find this fussy and itchy on my short neck, personally. This is very much a personal opinion thing and not a right or wrong thing. . . .

Womenspirit makes a mandrian collar sort of janey to wear under robes, and I’m wondering if something simpler (even a simple square black or white scarf) would work too. I’ve never really done the geneva gown thing so I’m not sure what the expectation is.

  3. Here’s the deal, gals. My regular robe is a Womenspirit robe with a high enough collar that I don’t need to wear anything under it. This is for my Geneva Gown, where only a tiny bit of the lace will show. I’ve seen it on other colleagues and fell in love with the look. It’s very New England, very elegant and very feminine, but also suggests a colonial-era man, which I love. I think a plain black piece of fabric at the neck is dullsville, it’s not me, it’s flat and masculine and BO-RING. A mandarin collar is also too severe for me, and I want something that I can fluff up a bit. And that flash of white near the face is a big help in reflecting some light.

  4. So…will the lace be inside the robe so that just a bit shows at the neck or will it be on the outside of the robe? I’m not clear about that.

  5. I think it would look like what the female justices on the Supreme Court wear which I think looks very nice.

  6. Your post made me google “Geneva gown” on google images, and that led to a question–do men wear their suit jackets under their Geneva gowns? I can’t tell in the photos.

I (a woman) almost always wear my gown, when I wear it, over a suit with my jacket on. My shirt does not always have a collar. Guys, do you wear your suit jacket under your Geneva gown?
