Beauty For Beauty

I really like to support the arts in every way I can, and most of the time that means attending and participating in theatre and music. I do love the visual arts, too, and have planned entire trips around certain museums.

There is a really vibrant painting scene where I live and many talented artists in my congregation. I have collected a few pieces in the eight years I’ve served this church, and I just acquired a painting from dear friend and local artist Sally Dean Mello. I have a little bank account for this sort of thing: and please don’t judge, I use it to buy special shoes and art. The fund is comprised of wedding fees.

So for me, it’s like love + ministry = beauty and art that I will cherish for a long, long time.

The little corgi belongs to the artist. The beagle is mine, posing at home with the painting. He likes it even though he thinks it should feature a dog instead of a cat.

  1. First I love the painting. Second I don’t think anyone will judge you for setting aside money to buy art and special shoes. Everyone should their discretionary money for what makes their heart sing.

  2. I love the idea of investing in beautiful things with your wedding $. That has a lovely synchronicity to it!

  3. Great ideas. I knew a Rabbi who charged a princely sum to do a wedding and put the money in a family foundation to give away. My occasional honoraria would never justify a foundation, but they do justify something special! I usually send the $ off to my kids or a special cause that wasn’t in the plans, but your idea has great merit. Love the art — including the wreath the woman is wearing. A winner, a champion, I think that’s so fitting for you!

  4. I too, love both the painting and the idea of the fund–though I will admit that on first glance I thought the cat in the painting was a roasted chicken… 🙂
