Big Heinous Pores

A cry for help from a lovely pastor who claims that the big pores on her schnoz make her look like W.C. Fields. I know that isn’t true, but it’s a great image so let’s just GO WITH IT.

She sez,

Tip for large pores on the nose? My nose is looking like a strawberry lately. I use the mineral powder makeup which works well to even out color, but it doesn’t disguise the pores.

My own Strawberry Shortcake!
The sad fact is that there’s not a whole lot we can do about enlarged pores, which are hereditary and often hormonally-related. Certainly apply a good pore-shrinking facial mask to your nose (something with a clay base — I like the cheap Queen Helene stuff for that purpose) and see if that helps. An application of witch hazel or another toner every night and morning might also help a bit, as will a professional facial. IT may be that your skin care regimen needs a change; ometimes the warm weather makes my pores big and saggy. Dehydration can be a culprit, as can booze and cigarettes (hey, quit partying out there, will you!?).

However, to really diminish the appearance of big pores, you can use a make-up primer like Laura Geller’s Spackle. As you may recall, I am not a fan of mineral make-up, although I know it has a very fine reputation for giving its users flawless-looking skin.
The Spackle or similar product will most definitely work. Ask your friendly Sephora employee or local cosmetics clerk whether mineral make-up will work over the primer, because I actually don’t know.

Let us know if anything works!
Kiss of peace!

Queen Helene here is too drying for the whole face but I love her for my chin, nose and forehead (aka “oily T-zone).

  1. I have found mineral makeup to not be a problem at all over primer, though I use a different brand of primer.

Actually, one of the big mineral makeup lines has now come out with its own primer…

  2. I use Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner, with Alpha and Beta Hydroxy, a few times a week on my T-zone. I’ve found that it noticeably shrinks the pores on my nose, removes nasty pore goo and prevents blackheads.

(A tip if you try it: sunscreen is crucial after using hydroxy products.)

[Oh, what a good tip! Thanks for the product rec!- PB]

  3. There is a new mineral makeup (whatever that brand is–bare escentuals?) that supposedly has a matte finish. I’ve not tried it yet but that would be an improvement.

sephora primer is awesome–I use the green–and not outrageously expensive.

  4. It turns out that hand sanitizer does the same thing as that Queen Helene stuff! Who knew? It killed a blemish (reverend ladies do not use the word “zit”) overnight – amazing.

Which reminds me, dearly beloved: hand sanitizer is very drying. I’m sure PeaceBang will agree with me that we need to remember to keep our hand cream close at hand. Age shows first on hands and neck!

  5. I had a facial this week and when asked about my skin care routine, I confessed that I just spread handlotion on my face and that’s it. & stay out of the sun. Starting in my fifties I used some makeup, and at 60 the mineral powder, which works better than liquid for me. The woman doing the facial laughed (the prior one gave a very disapproving look and muttered) and said the problem is that hand lotion isn’t nourishing/hydrating enough, and often has fragrances that don’t help the face. So I bought a tube of Dermalogica brand “skin smoothing cream” at the Newbury Street salon price (much cheaper on Amazon, I see now). Have you reviewed this line?
[No, but it has a good reputation… let us know how it works!! – PB]
