Henna Tats

A month ago I got a big lotus henna tattoo on the anniversary of my ordination.

lotus-tattoo

It looked kind of like this only in henna-brown, of course. And it was located right on my sternum.

I felt very kewl.

I went to an art fair again last weekend and was right on the verge of getting another one done when I remembered, gasp! – I am offiicating at a wedding this weekend! And no one needs that much gypsy-hippie-mama at their rehearsal dinner, so I put a little heart on my foont. It’s real purty. So I’ll look only slightly surprisingly hippie mama-ish but with an occasion-appropriate symbol.

The thing about ministry is that you always have to think ahead. I’m sorry I can’t do anything about my bitten-to-bits nails but I smashed my left index finger in the car door a week ago and it would like mighty stupid to have nine beautiful fake nails and the one scrabbly blue one. I’ll just file the nails that I got, put some clear polish on them, Band-Aid the icky blue one, and call it a day. My hair, make-up, outfit, necklace and earrings will be the focus, not my hands. I’m not wearing rings, bracelets or a watch (well, maybe a watch) so nothing will draw attention to my paws.

Isn’t it SO MUCH FUN when we get to officiate at happy occasions for people we know and love? I know I’ve said it before but I’m so excited about this weekend I can’t sit still! I just wrote the homily and oh! I really hope I don’t cry.

  1. How long does the henna tattoo stick around until it fades?

I have always wanted to get one, but haven’t yet.

I think you made the right choice by going with a small tasteful heart.

    Thanks,

Rev Chuck [Well, this one lasted a full week, which was terrific. I think they're fun. - PB]

  2. Oh, the homily. I am officiating for my friends in a couple months (eep! six weeks!!) and just met with them about the ceremony this past weekend. It is a relatively secular ceremony, and it will be up to me and my very careful choice of words to imbue the ceremony with appropriate sacredness…. without using words like sacred. Difficult.

We have readings, prayers, ring exchange and vow introduction set, and I am down to doing research on handfasting (a new bit of the ceremony they realized they might enjoy, yikes), and The Homily. I am so intimidated, but undaunted. How to talk about the Institution of Marriage (with a quick blip about equality and civil rights of marriage), and also my friends? It is a tangled web we weave, I guess.

I am absolutely, totally LOVING this series of posts about weddings, PB; the timing is beyond perfect, and it is giving me butterflies and confidence at the same time. Thank you so much.

    xoxo,
    SK
