Men’s Shirts Again

Jeanne thinks my shirt picks for dudes are hideous, so let me try again.

I’m having a hard time, guys! There are a LOT of u-u-ugly clothes out there for you! PeaceBang is so sorry!

Jeanne asks, “What about a polo?”
I think they’re too casual, their colors wear out in the wash, they show spots very easily, and they look terrible pulled over even a medium-sized gut. Here’s Banana Republic’s version of a polo but it’s way too Euro-chi-chi and revealing to work for clergy. That lightweight pima cotton is great if you’re about 22 years old, have a perfect bod and are out on the town for the evening, but it’s really not substantial enough for a professional hombre.

And look at this. I love the bright splash of color, but how Mr. Thin-man do you have to be to get away with pants cut like this???

Macy’s says it’s spring men’s wear is all about Bringing Color Back, but where’s the color? What I’m seeing is GINGHAM Izod shirts (gingham!?? are you cereal?) and stripes that make a man look like mattress ticking.

Dammit, now I’m on a crusade. I will not rest until I find some decent bright colors on decent garments for my fellas.

  1. I am loving the short-sleeved polo-style shirts that Mossimo has at Target. Knit but not thin or clingy. Rich colors. No ribbing (the part I think looks the most casual/careless); instead, the collar is flat and edgestitched like a woven shirt collar, and the sleeves are hemmed with a double line of stitching instead of a stupid ribbed cuff. And a price tag of something crazy like $14??

I confess, I spotted this shirt in maroon – very rich, not faded! – on a guy across the room at a party, and made him tell me all about it! So now I’m sharing. :-)

  2. I hated those shirts you showed yesterday too but held my tongue. If you’ve watched Arrested Development they are just like the ones that George Michael wears and if you’re familiar with that show you know that everything is a joke. [OY! Such a blooper I made! I was just trying to find something that the groovy Hawaiian shirt devotees could conceivably get behind. I still love the seersucker, but as to the other ones, there's no love between us. Let's have a bonfire! - PB]

  3. Thanks for looking again!

    Here are a few I came across…

Roll the mouse over the shirts to see the other colors.

    This is colorful (3 option)

This is great (also three options- don’t get freaked out by the pink)but would need some serious ironing. Old Navy has lots of sizes though, and they’re inexpensive!

    A few more selections here:

[You rock! LOVE the Joseph A. Banks choices! I think the Old Navy looks a little bit too young and unprofessional for clergy dudes, but mostly I'm not a huge fan of big plaid patterns. You're hired as my new research assistant! - PB]

  4. Hey, I liked yesterday’s pics! As for the gingham at Izod? Egads! I couldn’t get my chaplian spouse in a polo if it was the only shirt in the store…so…

  5. In situ, e.g. the Islands or Southwest US, Hawaiian shirts can look good on men, at least the ones I know. My bias. Not for Pulpit wear!
