Loving On You

May 30, 2007 on 10:30 am | In Miscellany |

Hi friends,

I’m on the run these days, teaching a three-hour summer intensive every day at a local seminary (a 45 minute drive each way), closing out the church year, doing all manner of pastoral ministry. Trying to start the days with a smoothie (with Barleans Flax Seed oil) instead of two slices of toast heavily slathered with creme cheese and salmon.

I have received beautiful gifts from three of you — packages that I opened while in an exhausted haze after returning from Nashville and fell asleep with on my bed (how’s that for a mental image? PeaceBang with Barbara Kingsolver and Tim Gunn and a little black-capped chickadee picture with a quote that made me cry next to her).
These gifts are lovely — I’m sure I’ll write a review of Tim Gunn’s book as soon as I get a chance, and Barbara Kingsolver’s book is so riveting I can’t put it down, dammit!

So this just to say that I’m thinking of you, and of all of us, and may not get to say more than that for a bit.

Who said that Mad Priest was having a hot fashion controversy and needed my help? Is that true? Even though the Mad Priest gang mercilessly chucked on me awhile back, I am THERE FOR THEM in Christian love and lipgloss.

Just not for a few days.

Sarah and Cindyreally and … lovely New Jersey woman whose name is at my office … you’re sweet as can be, and I send you a special kiss of peace and gratitude.

  1. So you like the Kingsolver book? I’ve been seeing it around for a while but avoiding it for no good reason… maybe I’ll go and read it now! Thanks :)

  2. Peacebang, This is not a pressing question but one that I’m sure you have thought about. It came to me as I was looking at my black-pumped feet at the coffeeshop this morning.

Yesterday I bought my first pair of nylon booties — these are the kind that are supposed to be invisible when worn with shoes. They’re wonderful and practical and keep shoes from getting all hot and sweaty in the summer when worn with bare feet. But, and here’s my question, if the booties peak out from the edges of the shoes no matter how many ways you try to reposition them on your foot, is it still okay to wear them? There’s no unsightly toe cleavage at issue here, just peeking nylon. This is not unlike being able to see the top of nylon kneehighs sometimes worn (but not by me) with long skirts.

I know you’ll have something insightful to share.

  3. @Em, it’s SO GOOD. Definitely one you should get.

@Amy: you mean like those little footies things? That appear on the sides of your feetsies? Oh, those are okay. I mean, they’re not the sexiest things around but they’re kind of like a sock.

However, seeing the tops of nylons with skirts is SO ILLEGAL. Don’t you try that, young lady! I almost disowned my own mother for doing that and she laughed and laughed because who do you think first drummed it into my head that we Do Not Wear Knee-Highs With Skirts??

  4. PB, I just realized that I am totally clueless about summer shoes. I have worked as a summer camp counselor and as a trip leader. For both jobs sandals or tennis shoes were pretty much uniform. Even when I was younger we always wore “pretty sandals” in the summer–no socks or hose. I know that you’re iffy on sandals for the clergy types. I realized last night that I have no idea what are acceptable summer shoes. I would really rather not wear hose (it is HOT and humid in the summer) but I hate the sweaty-slimy shoe thing. If it makes a difference, I usually wear light long pants (like linen) or a knee-length skirt. I am young and very small.

  5. Oh, PB, I’m days late seeing this, but it was me who called for your fashion sense over at MP’s. Actually, I didn’t call for you there, others did, so I thought I’d come over and tell you, but did so at your other site, which was probably confusing. Anyway, it’s a week old now, though the same issue did come up today, which is the poor Archbishop of Canterbury’s wife, who is in deadly need of a makeover.

Just started Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and am loving it!
