Holiday and Special Events Outfits

Darlings!! Welcome back!! Climb onto the tobaggan and prepare for that wild ride through Advent and Christmas that finally comes to a half that sweet January day when we put on our Snuggies, curl into the fetal position and whimper for at least 24 solid hours. If you haven’t scheduled at least one whole day upon which to remain in your Snuggie and eat nothing but soft-boiled eggs and toast, please pencil it in NOW. You will need it, and you will deserve it.

But we’re not there yet! Oh no, we’re not! We are just making the soup from the carcass of our Thanksgiving turkeys at this point, crafting Advent sermons, putting up decorations and planning to meet with our volunteer Christmas pageant directors, bless their hearts. We are GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT, and that is a wonderful thing. However, PeaceBang knows that as we Get Into the Spirit, we are often tempted to don gay apparel that is less than befitting a respected religious leader, so she wants to remind you to please resist.

I mean, this is pretty dignified compared to the really corny stuff, but you get the idea.

HO HO NO.

Here are some old columns on the perils of holiday dressing:

This one’s fun.

I like this one a lot, too.

I’ve got two holiday concerts coming up and a party, but none of those events are church-related so I can just wear fun stuff and load up on the big costume jewelry. For church events, I still favor simply jackets with a big beautiful pin or sparkly scarf or something, nice trousers and high-heeled boots. A nice manicure, hair, make-up, etc. Last Christmas I wore a rhinestone headband that didn’t get any bad reviews for catching the light in the church, so I may reprise that:

If you’re looking for ideas, here are some things I thought expressed “holiday flair” without treading into “deranged Santa Lady” territory (they’re all plus-sized items that you can find at CJ Banks if you’re interested):

PeaceBang always loves black.

If you must do “festive,” I think these two items achieve that in a way that isn’t garish:

I think this would be cute under a denim jacket with a long skirt and boots.

The fact that I included an ACTUAL CHRISTMAS TREE graphic either means that I’ve lost it, or this is actually a really pretty graphic. I can’t tell.

What do you think, pigeons?

  1. Brilliant! I’m doing a post on ugly Christmas sweaters tomorrow–I’ll include a link to this for how to do it RIGHT.

(Aforementioned post inspired by discovering that if you search for “ugly sweaters” on eBay you get over 3,000 results, nearly all of which are Christmas-related.)

  2. I actually kind of like the long sleeved tee with gem snowflake — and your idea of wearing under denim jacket with long skirt (and boots, of course). There’s a CJ Banks here and I might just check it out later today, since tomorrow’s sermon is done!

Good to have you back, PB — missed you! -cme

  3. …but I thought that gay apparel meant well tailored clothing in nice fabrics with stylish, but not vulgar, accessories? At least it does for most of the guys I know. [Ha Ha Ha, darling. Would that the gay men who know how to don elegantly gay apparel tutor those who have a less classic sense of “gay apparel.” – PB]

  4. Two cents on the poll items – I like the designs well enough, but something about how they interact with the bust doesn’t sit quite right with me, so to speak. The designs could highlight an odd and unintended shape. Probably just me. I’d have to see it in person.

  5. I like the first two for anyone, but the Christmas tree is a bit overstated if you’re going for a classic look. I would wear it, but choir singers can get away with splashier stuff.

  6. my daughter is always on the look out for the tacky holiday ties. She is in high school jazz band and the wear black pants, white shirts, plain flats – but the director lets them “go wild” with the tie. 🙂
