Eleven years ago I phoned the Unitarian Church in Baton Rouge to see if they might need some help there in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when their population exploded with refugees from New Orleans. It was on my mind and heart, how exhausted the ministers must be. So I called and I wound up going to help.
Today I called again to check in on the same minister, who, thank God, is still there and therefore in a position to dp extremely effective ministry because of his longevity and level of trust with the community. But oh, not again!
We talked for awhile about the situation but I just want you to know that he got a haircut yesterday.
That is a very wise man.
And you know why. When the waters are rising and you’re going to be back and forth with the spiritual and organizational lifeboat for days and weeks, you have to remember to do the things that make you feel human and together and capable. Getting a haircut is one of those things.
So is sleeping, eating, and laughing.
Praying for Baton Rouge and hope to hear from those of you who are ministering in the area.
